Description
**This position has two openings to be filled.**
Under close supervision, perform technical assistance duties and site visits to residential, multi-family and commercial solid waste/recycling/compost collection services customers to monitor waste diversion activities and encourage additional diversion of materials from landfill and proper participation in the recycling and compost collection programs; assist the City and its franchised collection services contractors with public education and outreach activities; distribute public education and outreach materials; conduct surveys and document program participation activities; and perform related work as directed.
Distinguishing Features
This is an intern classification designed to provide high school and college/university graduates an entry into the field of sustainability and waste management. The position is currently funded by a grant from the State of California (CalRecycle) and the employee is anticipated to work a total of approximately 900 to 1,100 hours depending on pay rate and scheduling needs. Employees receive on-the-job training and are reimbursed the current Federal mileage rate for all miles driven that are work related. The initial hourly pay rate ranges from $15.00 to $21.00 per hour and will be determined based on qualifications. The employee’s performance will be evaluated monthly resulting in consideration of adjusting the hourly pay rate to higher amounts within the pay rate range.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (illustrative only)
- Assist City staff and the City’s contractors with waste audits and disseminating recycling containers, totes, signage, and public education materials (decals, doorhangers, posters, service guides, etc.).
- Assist City staff with the development and coordination of community awareness education campaigns and programs to increase waste reduction, recycling, and proper disposal of materials.
- Observe and document the status of residential, multi-family and commercial customers participation in the City’s recycling programs.
- Direct customers to the City’s franchised collection services contractors to establish or obtain technical assistance in improving their recycling program.
- Assist City staff in investigating complaints and propose corrective actions.
- Facilitates and participates in promotional and educational opportunities through the following, but not limited to, multi-family and commercial site visits, multi-family community events, business association/civic organization events, City-sponsored community events and other opportunities as assigned.
