Dear IIT Bombay Network and Computing Resource Users
IIT Bombay has been alerted by representatives of a commercial software company about unlicensed usage of some software products owned by this company where the usage has been traced to computers inside IIT Bombay.
Please note that many commercial software products have mechanisms by which messages containing data that can identify the users of the software are sent directly to the company’s servers (either immediately or as and when the computer is connected). Crucial details (like Mac-ID, username, hostname, time-stamps) reach the company’s servers, together with details about license (validity, toolboxes’ usage, etc).
For the recent case, based on such data given by the company, Computer Centre of IIT Bombay is in the process of locating the computers and users of the unlicensed software. Those users will be contacted directly and separately in a few days.
This email is to re-iterate to all our users that IIT Bombay will not tolerate any illegal use of its network and computing resources. All users should recall that as part of the process of activation of your LDAP IDs, each user has agreed to the IIT Bombay IT access policy (http://www.cc.iitb.ac.in/engpolicies/engitaccesspolicymenu/40-it-access-policy-general), under which the user is solely responsible for his/her actions - IIT Bombay is not responsible and liable for legal consequences of user’s actions. If your guests are using a guest account made from yours, then the guest’s usage becomes your sole responsibility.
Users involved in any illegal usage are hereby directed to immediately stop such activities and to stop using such unlicensed software from any machines/PCs/laptops/servers which are on the IIT Bombay network. Further it is directed that any unlicensed software be immediately uninstalled/deleted from these machines.
Users failing to comply with these directions will be liable for strict disciplinary action in addition to suspension of network privileges. Further such users are liable to reimburse / indemnify the loss / expense incurred by IIT Bombay for defending itself in case any legal action is taken against IIT Bombay. Further, such users are liable to face legal consequences, both criminal and civil, directly from the commercial software company, and IIT Bombay would not be able to provide any support to the user.
Action items mentioned above may be noted as priority.
Yours sincerely,
Suresh
