Hi all,
In keeping with the momentum in the group over recent months and also
the desire expressed at the last few meetups with regard to having
more of a presence, I think it would be a good idea to have a url, a
Twitter handle and a #hashtag. As discussed at a few of the last
meetups I think the website could be a public github repos (or create
a github 'Team' with group members) which would allow everyone to
contribute. I think the access to the Twitter account should be opened
up in the same way (or write a bot to retweet stuff from our accounts
when we use the hashtag, you get the idea).
I know that we have used #nclrb in the past, and both
nclrb.com / .
co.uk and @nclrb are still available, however around the
table at work some regulars expressed their doubts as to the
'marketability' (read: ease of recognition) when used as something
that identifies us publicly. Nevertheless I think it's important for
the group to decide what should be done so I'm putting it out there.
I have three reservations about nclrb:
1. rb stands for Ruby Brigade, but we normally call ourselves, like
most other UK ruby groups, ruby group, or ruby user group and have
been known by that at SuperMondays etc.
2. ncl stands for Newcastle, but I don't think this fully encompasses
the breadth of the group in terms of where we all come from. It would
be good to embrace the North East and include Durham, Sunderland and
Middlesbrough (@xocs) etc., this might also encourage those from
further afield to travel.
3. The fact that ncl.rb isn't clear to someone who doesn't know what
ncl.rb is, and most people would search for ruby group newcastle or
ruby group north east.
I did a search for various names, with three requirements, the .com
was available, the .
co.uk was available and the Twitter handle was
available, and the best I could come up with was
rubynortheast.com / .
co.uk and @rubynortheast
I'd love to hear what people think of the idea and which name we
should settle on so that we can get something set up in good time to
advertise the September meetup. Please add your thoughts below, and
which name you favour.
Regards,
Philip
PS. If you wonder why the above urls are taken, it's because I've
taken them to save being scuppered by domain squatters hoping to
relive their 90s hey days.
