Yun Yen obeyed his master's instructions, brought the letter to Yueh
Shan. Tao
Wu received his brother, and lead him to the great master 's place.
After reading
the letter, Yueh Shan asked :
- Usually, what are the teachings of my big monk brother Hai ?
Replied :
- " Awake beyond the three sayings " and " Understand and grasp the
beyond of
the six sayings. "
The great master said :
- 3000 miles away, happy to have not to relate to.
And asked again :
- Is there any saying else ? (1)
Replied :
- Once, after teaching, when people left, the great master ( Pai Cheng )
called
them. When people turned their head, Pai Cheng said : " What's that ? "
Yueh Shan said :
- Why don't you tell that early ? Brother Hai is still alive. Through
you, ( I ) know
Pai Cheng.

Or they have a saying which summerize the whole teaching : ie. nha^'t
cu' tu+? :

beyond
the three sayings ; Understand and grasp the beyond of the six sayings.
Or they composed an anecdote, ie. the fox of Pai Cheng; the monk of Ta
An
temple; those anecdotes are fiction, not historic fact.
Or record of the sayings of zennists with their masters. Those anecdotes
can be as
