Tsu T'ang Chi (135)

Later, there was one day Yun Yen took leave of Yueh Shan. Yueh Shan said
:
- Where will you go ?
Replied :
- I will go to my big brother monk Kuei Shan.
The great master said :
- What to do ?
Replied :
- I and Kuei Shan had a vow when we were at Pai Cheng.
The great master said :
- What is your vow ?
Replied :
- When we were at Pai Cheng, Kuei Shan was chief cook, I was the
attendent, we
were an inseparable pair beside Pai Cheng ( and vow to help him ).
Later, we do
not fulfill the vow. I like to fix it.
The great master gave permission, Yen went down the mountain. Tao Wu
helped
him by bringing his lugggage down to the farewell gazebo. When he came
back,
he did not speak to the great master. The great master asked :
- Have you bid farewell to your big monk brother yet ?
Replied :
- I have.
Tao Wu then asked :
- My big brother leave you, is it good for him ?
The great master said :
- Great monk Chih, why do you have to ask that ? For many years ( you
two )
work together, what do ( you ) do not do ? what do ( you ) do not plan
with ? You
do not need to ask that way.
Tao Wu said :
- No. One word from you, is the mock for next generations. Please give
me a
word.
The great master said :
- If so, I will tell you : " Eye is there, but need filter. "(1)
Tao Wu heard that, that night, he went out. Next morning, he reached the
village
down the mountain, catched his brother, told him what had Yueh Shan
said, then
they went back to Yueh Shan. They stayed with the great master without
leaving
him till his death.
