It is interesting to see what sorts of headlines get published in
newspapers when a given set of data is released by one group or another:
Given the following data concerning work related deaths in the U.S.:
3.8 men per million per year die at work.
0.4 women per million per year die at work.
The cause of death for each sex ranked in order of incidence:
Men: Women:
Road Accidents Murder
Murder Road Accidents
(Other causes) (Other causes)
The headline that results:
"Murder Most Common Cause of Death for Women at Work"
Given the following data regarding murder:
1780 men murdered in Harris County Texas in 1995
380 women murdered in Harris County Texas in 1995
60% of men were killed by someone they knew. In 38% of cases it was
their wives that killed them.
85% of women were killed by someone they knew. In 45% of cases it was
their husbands that killed them.
The headline that results:
"45% of Murdered Women Killed by Husbands"
Even when they manage to get the statistics right,
the anti-male bias is evident.
