WOMEN BUYING MORE RECORDS THAN MEN
----------------------------------
Quebec Songbird Celine Dion, the saucy Spice
Girls & Toronto angst-rockers Our Lady Peace
are Canada's record-sales champs in 1997, ac
cording to SoundScan's year-end figures.
Dion's new album, Let's Talk About Love, has
already shipped about one- million copies in
Canada since its release in November, pushing
it well ahead of its closest rival:the Spice-
Girls' debut record, 'Spice', which has sold
more than 800,000 units since it appeared, in
1996. Both also had another album in the year
-end top 20.
Our Lady Peace's sophomore disc, 'Clumsy' has
sold 600,000, slotted in at no.4, just behind
MuchMusics's Big Shiny Tunes compilation.
'Clumsy' was the ONLY RECORD BY A NON-FEMALE
ARTIST to make it into a top 30 that featured
such domestic heavyweights as Sarah McLachlan
(No.7), Shania Twain (No.16), and Amanda Mar-
shall. (No.17)
In fact, SoundScan's year-end top 100 was rel
atively light on Canadian talent overall--and
Canadian male talent in particular. Besides
Our Lady Peace, the highest-charting male Can
adian artists were The Tragically Hip (Live
Between Us at no.31), Moist ( Creature at no.
38), and Great Big Sea (Play at No. 48).
The SoundScan chart is compiled from the nat-
ional record of retailer's reports.
