December 25

1-4. Duduk Quintet: "Yaraz", "Alacyaz", "Sourp, Sourp" & "Ankoot
Aghchig/Hoven Ingam" from "Winds of Passion" Garni
-This is a find! My god, a single duduk is such an exquisite
instrument, why not put five together and get five times the beauty? The
duduk quintet is made up of Armenian ex-patriates living in L.A.,
unfortunately this apparently tiny label is not easy to get. Our local
store had several copies of this disc on backorder for 8 months, and only
one came in. I was lucky enough to snatch it up, as now there are quite a
few other people who want copies.
5. Nerces le Gracieux: "Amen, Hary Sourp" from "Armenie 1" Ocora
6. Komitas Vartabed: "Arorn ou Tatrakn" & "Kali Yerg" from "The Voice of
Komitas Vartabed" Traditional Crossroads

7. A Cumpagnia: "Missa Corsica" from "Missa Corsica in Monticelli" K617
-Another exquisite and rare disc. A mass comprised of traditional
Corsican liturgical pieces assembled here and presented as a complete
mass.
8. Osvaldo Golijov: "K'vakarat" performed by the Kronos Quartet Nonesuch

9. Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan & Party: "Dam Mast Qalandar" from "Live in
New York City" M.I.L. nr
10. Sheikh Ahmed Barrayn: "Madih" from "B'Ismillah" SoundsTrue
11. Waaberi: "Rog Rogosho" from "New Dawn" Realworld nr
12. Esma Redzepova & Ensemble Theodosievsky: "Szelem Szelem" from "Road of
the Gypies" World Network
-What a voice! A wonderful, stirring performance of this important
gypsy song.
13. Kalyi Jag: "Csilavta" from "Road of the Gypsies" World Network
-Another wonderful voice! I possess two discs by Kalyi Jag, one on
Playasound and the other on Hungaratron, does anyone know of more discs?
14. Blehorkestar Bakija Bakic: "Pobjednicki Cocek" from "Road of the
Gypsies" World Network
-I should mention that this is a great compilation of Gypsy music,
probably the best one I've heard. And the first (that my nationalistic
Serbian friends pointed out) that includes Serbia and the Balkans.
15-18. Strada: "De Matin ai rescountra lou trin", "Nadal Tindaire",
"Touro-louro-louro", "Ayios & Vasilis" from "Nadal" Analekta c
19. Loreena McKennitt: "Good King Wenceslas" from "A Winter Garden"
Quinlan Road. c
20. Suwa Devi Kalbelya: "Kaman Song" from "Road of the Gypsies" World Network
-Certainly no shortage of exquisite female gypsy singers on my show
today.

21. Klezmatics & Itzhak Perlman: "Simkhes Toyre Time" from "In the
Fiddler's House" Angel
22. Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band: "Ale Brider" from "Flying Bulgar Klezmer
Band" FBR c
23. Itzhak Perlman with the Klezmatics, Brave Old World, Klezmer
Conservatory Band & the Andy Statman Klezmer Orchestra: "Finale" from
"Live in the Fiddler's House" Angel
-In celebration of Chanukah and the anniversary of Israel, these
songs (particularly the two versions of Ale Brider) reflect the
celebration and joy this season should hold for everyone, and my hopes for
peace in Israel and Palestine.

24. Franz Liszt: "Ave Maria d'Arcadelt" performed by Philip Thomson Naxos c

due to the very large amount of promotional material which CKCU receives
regularly and the lengthy delay in processing CD's, any CD cannot be
guaranteed immediate attention on my show. If you wish to be sure
something receives my attention, please send a SECOND copy
either to CKCU's address with that intention clearly stated, or to my home
address which is available by request (simply e-mail me).
