February 26

1-2. Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan & Party: "Hamd" & "Nat-i-Sharif" from "En
Concert A Paris vol. 3" Ocora Radio France nr
-This stunning live recording has just been re-issued in an equally
stunning five-volume box set at budget price.

3. Claudio Monterverdi: "Psalm: Laetatus Sum" performed by the Gabrieli
consort & players under Paul McCreesh Archiv
-This short and ecstatic piece has more similarities to Nusrat's
music than differences. The first four minutes has six soloists which
enter singularly or in pairs, trading off short melodic phrases and with
each other or solo instruments, which sound improvised, with the affect of
simple indulging in intoxicating physical and spiritual ecstasy, the last
two minutes are occupied by a full choir, which ends with a very pure
example of call-and-response with a soprano soloist. It is a piece of
complete devotion and celebration in praise of God, which is what Nusrat's
music is. It is truly striking the shared qualities and techniques
between such two different musics.
