The past two weeks CKCU has held its annual funding drive, because of
this, I did more talking than anything else on my show, and music was
played sporadically and without any continuity, so I chose not to post any
playlist. As for the funding drive, the amount raised was a bit higher
than last year. However, this year funds were only raised through direct
listener donations without lump sums from benefit concerts etc. as in
previous years. So in fact, the actual listener support was significantly
higher than last year. A very warm thanks to everyone who donated.

November 20

1. Ferus Mustafov: "45 min. excerpt from a private recording of a concert
in Belgrade, May, 1996."
-A stunning concert, Ferus Mustafov will be playing in Toronto,
December 5, at St. Clement's, infor (416) 421-7451

2. Kol Simcha: "Joseph Anastasia" from "Klezmer Soul" World Class nr
3. New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars: "D'Bronx Tantz" from "The Big Kibosh"
Shanachie nr
4. Hossam Ramzy: " Oyoun Sandra" from "Gammal Rawhany" ARC
5. King Sunny Ade: "Alashe L'Aiye" from "E Dide" Mesa
6-7. Radio Tarifa: "El baile de la Bola" & "Tangos de L'Agujero" from
"Rumba Argelina" Nonesuch/World Circuit
-I have finally heard this group that everyone else at Globe seem to
have been raving about. There is quite a lot good to say about them.
They also played a great concert last night as part of See & Hear the
world at the Museum of Civilization, apparently. Warning: do not leave it
to the morning the day of the concert to buy your tickets! At least I got
my Brave Old World tickets for January 29th.
8. Maria Alice: "Sol Na Tchada" from "d'zemcontre" Lusafrica nr
9. Augustin Barrios Mangore: "Una Limosnita por Amor de Dios" performed by
Philip Cadelaria Palladium
-Possibly my favourite piece for classical guitar, an exquisite
melancholoy pervades this short piece, probably due to the trill which is
played throughout the piece. Philip Cadelaria is Canada's best classical
guitarist and he will be playing two concerts of Latin & South American
works at Gloucester Town Center, 8 p.m. Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
Info. 837-6772
10. Astor Piazzolla: "Adios Nonina" performed by Emanuel Ax and Pablo
Ziegler Sony Classical
11. Ildo Lobo: "Sonte e bo Nome" from "Nos Morna" Lusafrica nr
12-13. Radio Tarifa: "Buleria Turcas" & "Lamma Bada" from "Rumba Argelina"
World Circuit/Nonesuch

14. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: "Piano Concerto no. 9 in E flat, K. 271"
performed by Jeno Jando Naxos
-Missing Radio Tarifa is well compensated by seeing this gorgeous
piece performed by Marc-Andre Hamelin with the NAC orchestra the night
before. Marc-Andre Hamelin proved beyond any doubt that he is by far one
of the top 3 or 4 pianists in the world (and certainly my favourite living
pianist). I have never heard such utterly perfect piano playing in my
life. Every aspect of his playing, interpretation, and technique was
staggering. Every single note had such attention to detail and clarity,
it was as if he had spent a lifetime planning out how every note could and
should be played. The orchestra was fantastic as well. On top of this,
Hamelin had written his own cadenza for the slow movement in c minor. An
unbelievable cadenza which contained dissonances unheard of before Bartok,
yet it grew out of the movement and complemented it perfectly, emphasizing
a very tragic aspect of this minor movement in an otherwise bright and
spirited piece. I was shaking by the end of the cadenza. If anyone
questions why Mozart possesses the status he has, well, this piece is a
very good example of why.

15. Liu Fang: "Melody from a Bamboo House" from "Chinese Traditional Pipa
Music" Oliver Sudden Productions c
16. Frantz Casseus: "Haitian Suite" performed Philip Candelaria Palladium
c

17. Majek Fashek & the Prisoners of Conscience: "Religion is Politics"
from "Spirit of Love" Interscope
-One of my favourite reggae musicians. I played it today as a
tribute to Junior Smith, who is celebrating the 20th anniversary of his
"Reggae in the Fields" Saturday on CKCU.

NOTICE: Do not send any promotional materials to either me or CKCU as
Canada Post is on strike. I will give notice when the mail is running again.
