October 23

1-3. Pan-African Orchestra: "Sisala Sebrew", "Explorations in Hi-life
structures" & "Akan Drumming" from "Opus 1" Realworld
-They played in Ottawa last night, a wonderful concert! They could
have played Akan Drumming forever and a day, and I would have stayed right
to the end grinning like an idiot!

4. Monks of Keur Moussa: "Tya Mom Ndam Gu Rey" from "Sacred Chants &
Rhythms from Senegal" Sounds True
5. Lemzo Diamono: "Dougou Dougou" from "Marimbalax" Stern's Africa nr
6. Afro-Cuban All-Stars: "Amor Verdadera" from "A Toda Cuba Le Gusta"
World Circuit/Nonesuch nr
-A wonderful album with a large screaming brass section, great
percussion and great piano with Ruben Gonzalez, easily one of the year's best.
7. Maria Alice: "Nesosofre" from "D'zemcontre" Lusafrica nr
8-9. Maxwell St. Klezmer Band: "Tumbalalaika" & "Mazl-Tov Dances" from
"You Should Be So Lucky" Shanachie
-A gorgeous rendition of "Tumbalaika", with great backing chorus.
The third verse is a cappella and simply exquisitie. They are also brass
heavy as in the Mazl-Tov Dances.
10. Zlatne Uste: "Aman, Aman, Monie Bre" from "No Strings Attached" Rounder
11. Bhuddist Nuns of Chuchikjall: "Morning in the Zanskar Valley" from
"Tibetan Prayer" Interra
12. Krystof Penderecki: "De Naturis Sonoris II" performed by the Warsaw
National Philharmonic under Andrzej Markowksi Philips classics
-A great piece with extensive use of modern instrumental techniques,
a very intense piece with lots of brass, showing Penderecki at his best.
13. Gyuto Monks: "Phel-den La-mo" from "Dharma Suna" Detour nr
14. Tibetan institute for the performing arts: "Nong-ma ta-la Shi-pa" from
"Dharma Suna" Detour nr
15. The Ilyas Malayer Ensemble: "Saqinama-l Iraq-l Bukhara, Ufar-l
Saqinama" from "At the Bazaar of Love" Shanachie
16. Bayram Bilge Toker: "Yildiz aksandam dogarsin" from "Bayram" Music of
the World
17. Ozer Senay: "Beyelunda Bir Aksam" from "Turkish Bellydance" ARC
18. Loreena Mckennitt: "Marrakesh Night Market" from "The Mask and Mirror"
Quinlan Rd/WEA c
19. Astor Piazzolla: "Tangueida" from "Luna" Hemisphere
20. Ruben Gonzalez: "Cumbanchero" from "Introducing..." World
Circuit/Nonesuch
-The liner notes have this quote "The greatest pianist I've ever
heard!" This is coming from Ry Cooder, which is an enormous
qualification, nonetheless, Ruben Gonzalez is a great pianist and this is
a great recording.

21. Franz Liszt: "Les Morts" performed by Philip Thomsom Naxos nr
-Here's another quote: "Franz Liszt was the greatest pianist ever!"
My quote.
22. Voce di Corsica: "A Violetta" from "Polyphonies" Olivi
23. Dlovan: "Dlovan" from "Vancouver Audio Profile" Aural Traditions
Records c
24. Budowitz: "Steiner's Honga/Schwartz's Sirba" from "Music of the 19th
century Klezmorim" Koch
25.Gradec Croatian Tamburitza Orchestra: "Somborsko Kolo" from "Vancouver
Audio Profile"
Aural Traditions Records c
26. Zronomir Croatian Choir: "Ladarke Idu u Selo" from "Vancouver Audio
Profile" Aural Traditions Records c
27. Wolfgang Rihm: "Depart for choir, speaking choir, and 22 players"
performed by the Weiner Philharmoniker under Claudio Abbado Deutsche
Grammaphon
28. Sarang Lee: "Sung Su Piri" from "Vancouver Audio Profile" Aural
Traditions Records c

29. Maxwell St. Klezmer Band: "Compote" from "You Should Be So Lucky"
Shanachie
-Interesting after "Freilech Fantasy" from the KCB's last album.
Both pieces are made up of numerous quotations from very famous classical
pieces. Unfortunately the KCB's piece simply sounds like a bunch of
quotes played one after the other by a Klezmer band. "Compote" on the
other hand, incorporates all the quotes into a whole which makes this a
great piece. A perfect way to end off the show.
