1. Mercan Dede: "Walking on the Red Sea - Dreams of the Sufi Saints" from
"Sufi Dreams" Golden Horn c nr
-A nice album with sufi instruments--ney, bendir, zarp etc.--over
deep synthetic bass a la Peter Gabriel. Often heavy use of synthesizers
such as on this album are used crassly to give a tonal harmonic bass to
non-harmonic music to make it easy on Western ears (such as Nusrat Fateh
Ali Khan's album with Michael Brook). However, they can be used
successfully, as they are here.
2-6. Loreena Mckennitt: "Prologue", "Marco Polo", "The Highwayman", "La
Serenissima" & "Dante's Prayer" from "The Book of Secrets" Quinlan Rd/WEA
c nr
-Her new album, while still a good album, unfortunately did not
expand her style at all. It has the same sound and instrumentation as her
last album (The Mask and Mirror), though not nearly as good as the
previous one. She usually makes good use of synthetsizers, but she
depends too much on them this time and not enough on acoustic instruments.
7. Marta Sebestyen: "Gold, Silver or Love" from "Best of..." Ryko
8. Mercan Dede: "Hirdelez - Dream of Perhan" from "Sufi Dreams" Golden
Horn c nr
-Another track, this one makes use of the gorgeous song "Erdelezi"
used as the theme for the "Time of the Gypsies", it is sung in fragments
and the occassional phrase with unusual accompanying harmonies, giving the
track quite a haunting effect.
9. Daniel Piazzolla Octet: "Elegia/Mi Viejo Piazzolla" from "Piazzolla by
Piazzolla" Milan
10. Pepe Romero & Chano Lobato: "Aquellos duros antiquos" from "Flamenco"
Philips Classics
11. Kol Simcha: "Jerusalem" from "Klezmer Soul" World Class nr
-A very nice album concentrating on slower Klezmer ballads played
mainly on the clarinet. This song seems to have a slow tango rhythm and
some beautiful piano playing, as well as the clarinet.
12-14. From "Best of Yiddish songs & Klezmer music" ARC nr
12. Massel Klezmorim: "Die Kale Basetzn"
13. Yaacov Shapiro: "Freitik oif der Nacht"
-A gorgeous song, Yaacov Shapiro has a great voice and there is some
great vocal accompaniement as well.
14. Gregori Scheichter's Klezmer Festival Band: "Freilach"
15. Goran Bregovic: "Cajesukarije-cocek" from "Undergound" CIBY 2000
16. Pirin National Folk Ensemble: "Na Medganon" from "The Legendary
Bulgarian Voices" ARC

18. Mopathe Diop: "Oubil M'Barken Diaye" from "Sabar Wolof - Dance
Drumming of Senegal" Village Pulse
19. Cheikh Lo: "Ndogal" from "Ne la Thiass" World Circuit/Nonesuch nr
20. Tito Paris: "No Intende" from "Graca de tchega" Lusafrica nr
-A wonderful album from Cape Vert, lots of brass and great singing.
21. Maria Alice: "Crumaxa" from "d'zemcontre" Lusafrica nr
22. Ildo Lobo: "Nos Morna" from "Conbersa co deus" Lusafrica nr
23. Cesaria Evora: "Coragem Irmon" from "Cabo Verde" BMG
24. Randev Pandit: "Karuna" from "Anhata" Darklight c
25. Resad Arnautovic & the Radio-Television orchestra of
Bosnia-Herzegovina: "Call to Prayer" from "B'Ismillah" nr
26. Emad Syyah: "Ma Baddi Njoum Essam" from "Modern Bellydance music from
Lebanon" ARC nr
-This song has a enjoyable strangeness to it that sounds like Danny
Elfman had a hand in writing it.
