15. Claudio Monterverdi: "Psalm: Laetatus Sum" performed by the Gabrieli
Consort & Players under Paul McCreesh Archiv
-A stunning, exuberant piece. Very upbeat continuo providing nice
constant momentum, with two sopranos who come in joyfully, playing with
the music--each other and the instruments, four male voices come in
continuing the exuberant interplay as the two sopranos drop out. After a
few minutes the music pauses, only to have the full choir enter very
powerfully. After a few statements the sopranos come back in and they
enter a great call-and-response with the choir, it sounds improvised and
very much the same effect as Nusrat & Party, a very brief section, yet one
that ends this fairly short, but wonderful piece on a very high note.
From a double-CD entitled "Venetian Vespers" Highly recommended!
