December 4

1. Hariprasad Chaurasia with Zakir Hussain: "Rag Ahir Bhairav -- Alap &
Jor, Slow gat in rupak taal, fast gat in teentaal" from "Venu" Rykodisc

2. Gidon Kremer with Milva (Astor Piazzolla): "Preludio para el ano 3001"
from "El Tango" Nonesuch nr
-Two perfect recordings of Piazzolla in two years (last year Gidon
Kremer released "Hommage a Piazzolla" also on Nonesuch), Gidon Kremer is a
wonderful violinist who understands Piazzolla perfectly. Milva has a
stunning voice on the several pieces where she sings.
3. James Keane: "Slan le Maigh" from "That's the Spirit" Green Linnet
4. Regis Gizavo: "Mpembe" from "MikeA" Shanachie nr
5. Xenos: "Sao Roma" from "My Mother Said" indie
-This is now the sixth version of the gorgeous song Erdelezi I have
played on my show. This is also one of the best.
6. Panegyris with Dora Stratou: "Portos suite" from "Greek folk
Favourites" Tradition
7. Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band: "Drei Neytorinis" from "Fire" Flying Bulgar
Recordings
8. The Karelian Folk Ensemble: "Kaski Meitou" from "Ingrian Folk Songs"
Gadfly nr
9. Pekel: "Douwe Jongens, Douwe" from "Van de Maas Naar de Oost" PAN
10. Einsteurzende Neubauten: "Ein Stuhl in der Holle" from "Strategies
against Architecture II" Mute
11. Ludwig Van Beethoven: "Musiz zu Friedrich Dunckers Drama "Lenore
Prohaska" WoO96" performed by the Berliner Philharmoniker under Claudio
Abbado with Sylvia McNair Duetsche Grammaphon

12. The Buena Vista Social Club: "Chan Chan" from "The Buena Vista Social
Club" Nonesuch/World Circuit
13. Paul Simon: "Born in Puerta Rico" from "The Story of the Capeman"
Warner nr
-Well! Something out of the past it would seem. It's been a bloody
long time for a new album by Paul Simon. Is it worth the wait? There's
some good stuff on this album, particularly the Latin influences, but I
think I would have rather had a collection of songs than this "musical" or
whatever you would call it. I'll reserve further judgement until I get a
better chance to hear it.
14-15. Celso Machado: "Parazula" & "Ponteado Africano" from "Varal"
Surucna c nr
-Brazilian Celso Machado has some very nice guitar music based on
numerous Brazilian sources as well as other influences.
16. Imaginary Heaven: "O come, O come Emanuel" from "Christmas Come in
Darkness" Mageda c nr
17. Gidon Kremer (Giya Kancheli): "Instead of a Tango" from "El Tango"
Nonesuch
-This great piece by Kancheli is always approaching a tango, yet
never really gets going. Almost frustrating in that way.
18. Gidon Kremer with Milva (Astor Piazzolla): "Che Tango Che" from "El
Tango" Nonesuch
-Just so the listener is not left frustrated, this fast tango with
the brilliant wordplay should serve well.

19. Shu-De: "Kadarchynyng Yry" from "Voices from the Distant Steppe" Realworld
-I have a feeling that I played so much Latin music today as a
reaction against the increasingly cold weather here. Denial is not the
answer however, so I ended the show with cold music from an equally cold
place. A beautiful album tho'.
