This must be a record! I sent off the press release only a few hours ago, and the following article has already appeared on Golwg. Translation follows below.

Cannoedd yn gwrthwynebu archfarchnad
Fe fydd trigolion tref fechan yn y Gorllewin yn cyflwyno mwy na 700 o lythyrau i wrthwynebu cynlluniau i gael archfarchnad yno.

Er mai dim ond 21 diwrnod oedd ganddyn nhw i wrthwynebu, mae ymgyrchwyr yn dweud eu bod wedi casglu 732 o lythyrau i wrthwynebu’r cais.

Dyma’r ail dro i’r cais gael ei wneud ar gyfer hen safle garej ynghanol Castellnewydd Emlyn ac, yn ôl y protestwyr, mae’r gwrthwynebiad yn gryfach na’r tro cynt.

“Mae Castellnewydd Emlyn yn ffynnu ar hyn o bryd; does yr un siop yn wag a does dim angen archfarchnad fel hyn,” meddai un o’r llefarwyr Richard Vale.

“Mae’r cynllun wedi cael ei symud ychydig ond mae bron yr un peth ag yr oedd o’r blaen.”

‘Camliwio’

Mae’r gwrthwynebwyr yn dweud bod y dystiolaeth i gefnogi’r cais, sy’n dod gan berchennog y garej, Cawdor Cars, yn camliwio sefyllfa fasnachol y dref.

Maen nhw hefyd yn disgwyl y bydd cwmni Lidl yn cael hawl trwy gais arall i godi archfarchnad gyferbyn â siop fawr CK’s sydd eisoes yn y dref ac, felly, yn dadlau y byddai trydedd siop o’r fath yn ddiangen.

Mae’r cais yn dadlau bod llawer o bobol yn gadael y dref i siopa ac na fyddai’r datblygiad yn gwneud drwg mawr i fusnesau bach lleol.

Hundreds oppose supermarket

People from a small town in the West will deliver more than 700 letters opposing plans for a supermarket.

Although they had only 21 days to voice their objections, campaigners say that they have collected 732 letters objecting to the application.

This is the second time an application has been made for the old garage site in the middle of Newcastle Emlyn, and according to the protesters, opposition is stronger than the first time around.

"Newcastle Emlyn is flourishing right now, and there is not one empty shop. We do not need a supermarket like this," said one of the spokesmen, Richard Vale

"The plan has moved around a bit, but it is almost the same as before."

‘Misrepresentation'

The objectors say that the evidence supporting the application which was provided by the owner of the Cawdor Cars garage, misrepresents the economic situation of the town.

They also expect Lidl to be granted permission to build a supermarket opposite the CK's store which already serves the town, and therefore they argue that a third store of this kind is not needed.

The applicant argues that many people are leaving the town to do their shopping and that the development would not harm small local businesses.

Hi Richard

Jonathan Edwards has sent this to Sue Lewis:

From: Jonathan Edwards <jon...@yahoo.co.uk>
Subject: Superstore application - Cawdor site
To: "Sue Lewis" <sue....@gwent-wales.co.uk>
Date: Saturday, 2 January, 2010, 11:06

--------------------

Sue

I understand that the action group campaigning against the proposed
supermarket in Newcastle Emlyn have issued a press notice in response to
the revised application for the Cawdor site. I fully support their
endeavours. Here’s a very small quote from me if you deem it worthy of
publication.

Jonathan Edwards, Plaid Cymru Prospective Candidate for Carmarthen East
and Dinefwr said:

“The County Councils own economic development strategy promotes the
sustainability of town centres and local businesses. A development of
this size in the heart of Newcastle Emlyn would clearly be contrary to
that policy. In the heart of a devastating recession policy makers
need to be supporting local companies and the local economy not
feathering the nest of big business. There is a clear economic
argument for preserving the uniqueness of the Town.”

Best wishes

Jonathan
