Letter to newspapers

at the recent (crowded) meeting of the Newcastle Emlyn town council to
discuss the Cawdor supermarket application, I was struck by three
things I heard from Mr Davies when his turn came to address the
council.
1) He asked rhetorically "how many of you here actually do your normal
weekly shop in Newcastle Emlyn?" and appeared genuinely surprised and
unbelieving when a seas of hands went up. He clearly couldn't really
believe that we all actually shop in the town. Where does he shop I
wonder?
2) He stated that he didn't understand where people got the idea that
the new store was three times the size of CK's. Well, his own Retail
Impact Assessment (on the council website) gives the retail floor
space as 1066sq. metres, compared to CK's at 400 sq. metres i.e. 2½
times the area. But this same document projects a turnover of £11.8m
compared to £1.8m for CKs: seven time the turnover. The true figure
may be just three times the turnover. So three times larger seems a
reasonable fugure. He should read his own documents.
3) Finally he asssured the council that the new store would not have a
cafe. How does he know? Surely the store operators have not yet been
decided? Or have they?
All this in just a three minute address.
