We were also having quality issues with the Slingbox in the beginning, but
we called our ISP (Barak) and they offered to optimize our Internet
connection for the United States. Apparently, the default optimization in
Israel (the Hebrew word is "adifut") is for sites in Israel and Europe, but
you can change your personal optimization by calling the ISP. Once we did
that, the quality of the Slingbox was great. Other American sites load more
quickly, too.

One word of caution -- we had to go through a few people when we called
Barak's customer service before we found this solution. You may need to
speak to a manager if the person who answers the phone doesn't know what
you're talking about.

Sounds like crap to me, unless they have a dedicated satellite uplink to a US Comsat, a peerage directly with MAE East bypassing Europe altogether, or some other alien technology. Does anyone know if cable trawlers have been sighted in the Mediterranean laying cable directly between Israel and the United States?

Of course, my own knowledge is somewhat limited. Shlomo, isn't this you?

My guess is that she was taken for another 40 sheks a month for 'optimized' US service.

Marc,

I tend to agree. In all likelyhood, here service was not up to specs and they just fixed the problem.

I've never heard anything like this before, but I do know that the big companies
that also do long distance like 012 (Golden Lines) and 013 (Barak) have sites
in the US. It's possible that they could adjust what IPs she's getting through
DHCP so that she would get some kind of priority service that would route
her over lines to the US directly instead of to a peering site in Israel,
which would then somehow get to the US.
