NCBS Volunteer Party Set For Saturday, August 19
Remember when this e-newsletter gave you the date for the 2006 NCBS
Volunteer Party? (Whew, thanks for forgetting!). The REAL date is
Saturday, August 19. We are carefully proofreading each one of your
exclusive personal invitations, over and over (and over) again. We
can't tell you where the party will be, but this year's gathering will
be held at a very unique, fun, cool place up in the mountains. You can
camp over if you like.
If you did any volunteer work for the Society over the past year, you
should receive one of the treasured invitations from your volunteer
"boss" SOON; if not, contact your boss, or Michael Hall
hal...@gmail.com . Thanks and we'll get you fixed up. This will be fun!

KPIG Radio Morning Host, Dallas Dobro, Very Ill -- To Be Fired On
Monday
Dallas Dobro, popular morning show host on the
Americana/Bluegrass-programmed KPIG Radio, Freedom (plus, San Francisco
& San Luis Obispo), CA. has been very seriously ill for much of the
spring and summer. According to his son, Luke Dobro, he has received a
letter from the station's Los Angeles' owners terminating his
employment unless he is at work on Monday, August 7. We have it on good
authority that he won't able to be there.
Dobro was the sole main stage emcee in the decades-long history of the
Strawberry Music Festivals near Yosemite until he suddenly collapsed
and was airlifted from Camp Mather to a Modesto hospital. Strawberrians
were stunned when a substitute emcee appeared, but Dallas escaped
medical imprisonment, was driven back up the mountain to the festival
(by the mayor of Modesto, no less), and was back onstage in less than 8
hours.
The KPIG stations are for sale; we down here at the Hall Law Office
have no direct knowledge or involvement, but we guess the potential
buyer has perhaps asked the seller to fire Dallas, so that the seller
will have complete responsibility for that action --and the buyer can
avoid the difficult problem of having an incapacitated star morning DJ.
We don't actually know. We also don't know the fate of KPIG's current
musical format under possible new ownership. We think ALL of this
sounds pretty BAD. http://www.kpig.com
Our (sometimes) reliable sources tell us that Dallas feels he can climb
each and every one of the steps to the famed Strawberry main stage on
Labor Day weekend. We'll be in the front row center to greet you when
you make it, Dallas! Tell us the one about the government workers'
vacation time and we'll close our eyes and everything will be OK.

Always Thinkin' At The End: I Want My Old MTV
This week is the 25th anniversary of the Music Television Network --
MTV. Sadly, the cable channel had far more musical influence when it
started out with 2 million US subscribers than it now has with 400
million worldwide. Numbers are useful, but vision and focus are even
more important. In the early days, the network planted its flag on the
video moonscape, and (if it didn't actually kill) it severely
challenged the radio star. Certainly, the music was creative, but the
presentation was more so. Bands experimented with the technology and
enjoyed a lax (but not completely absent) MTV finger on the censorship
button. For a time, there existed a huge creative surge in music,
exclusively of, by and for MTV.
Then, the powers-that-be decided to make some serious money out of the
network. Music was shown the back seat and "lifestyle" programs filled
most MTV airtime. Today, the network informs the young on such matters
as first roommates, pimped up cars, and school popularity. There is
very little music content. Profits, so we hear, are excellent; but
musical creative influence, well, not so good. (We aren't sure CBS
shareholders really care.)
At least the demise of MTV as a musical tastemaker has somewhat leveled
the playing field between cutting edge rock and cutting edge bluegrass
bands.
Hey, turn off that TV -- and I'll see you where the (bluegrass!) music
is...mh
