Hello,
I am going to Appalachian State University in about a month and I am looking
for climbing places/info in boone. I have read the climbing bouldering issue
and I am talking to everybody who knows anything about Boone, but I am still
anxious to learn more. I didn't see anything except spam on this newsgroup but
I figured I'd post a message anyway.

Thanks,
Greg M.

Greg, hook up with the folks in Outdoor Programs at ASU, Rich, Joe and
Brent are first class and can direct you to great sites. If you are an
experienced climber you might also want to work for OP while you are at
ASU. If not get involved in some of the climbing trips that they offer,
from intro stuff to month long trips in the summer. Tell them owen sent
you.

You're right. I'm gone for a few weeks and it's nothing but SPAM!

If you like lead climbing Linville Gorge is a great place, and there are
always climbers there if you want to hook up with the local wildlife.
Getting to the Table Rock parking lot is an adventure in itself, but with
Hawksbill, Table Rock, Little Table Rock, Devil's Celar, the Chimneys, the
NC Wall (including a few multi-day climbs), and Shortoff Mt. you can't ask
for a better climber's paradise on the east coast.

A bit closer to AppState is Ship Rock, on the back side of Grandfather
Mountain. If you can get a copy of the North Carolina Climber's Guide it is
a good resource, including access to the cliffs and route maps.

Good Luck. I wish I were still close enough to climb every weekend, but
such is work.

I already talked to someone in Outdoor Programs when I went down for
orientation, and I am going to go back when school starts. I am definately
interested in getting a job there but I have absolutely no climbing experience
in NC (save a rainy trip to Stone Mountain), so I may have to wait a while.
Thanks for the info,
Greg
