I started this thread, thinking from the discussion over at Chowhound
that we could arrange a dinner Sitar? Saffron, the Tower & order
dishes ahead of time, [ bbqme & me advising ]that would reflect real
indian cuisine
just a thought in case people are interested

I would love to experience non buffet Indian food. Tandoori chicken
aside. I mean I don't know the different types of breads outside of
Naan (I like breads). Spiciness can be an issue but it just means
I'll sweat a lot. Saffron is always popular. I wonder if we
shouldn't break in the new Saffron in Chapel Hill, but I don't know
the opening date and it may be a good idea to let them get their feet
under them. In short, I'd be up for it.

We're definitely "in" on the Indian outing -- depending on date & time, of course. Would love to a take detour off the saag paneer, chicken tikka, biryani route.

We are definitely up for this too.  The best indian we've had is always with others (Indians and the occasional Pakistani) doing the ordering.

Great idea,

We would be very interested too!

I'm leaning more towards Saffron or Tower, just to get a gathering a little more East!
I'm at the stage of enjoying what I have had, but not feeling I have much depth of experience with Indian food. So this idea sounds really great!

Okay, great. I wrote to bbqme to join the group here & discuss a
dinner.

1st. let me explain, Saffron cooks Northern food and as bbqme said
leans to the touristy creamy, though they do do a few unusual dishes.
The Tower (which has good reviews) is Southern and entirely
vegetarian.
Think of it like French and Italian cuisine, both great but
different. here is the menu from Tower http://www.towernc.com/menu.html
I know this kind of food & love it I love the dosa! It's a thin lentil-
rice crepe stuffed with potatoes. And so do many Indians, it's a
treat for Northern Indians just like it is to me.
.
So it would be easy to discuss Southern food, the various dishes,
what to look for. Plus the prices are very good.
I can look around and see if there is a good link that discusses the
basics of Indian food; the North/South divide then regions, then
regional specialties.
just tell me what you all would like

Hi Guys!

What about a Chatham Square crawl in Cary? For example, we could get
dosas, sambar, etc., at Udupi Cafe, then pop over to Cool Breeze for
some sev batata puris and other veg Indian street foods, and finish
with some sweet treats at Mithai. I know the fellow who owns Mithai
(he and his brothers went to the same school as my dad in Comilla,
Bangladesh!) and could get him to make some Bengali items especially
for us.

Yum! Sounds delicious and fun!

I think this is where I get my eyebrows threaded at Chandi's... Is this around the block from Super Wok?

(I'm a card-carrying Raleigh-ite, and Cary *still* confuses me after 12 years).

I agree. As someone who is always wanting to experience new things at
least once (as far as food goes.. fried tarantulas aside). I would
enjoy the opportunity. My knowledge of Indian food is very limited
and I know nothing of Bangladesh cuisine. I may have to invite a
friend along for the crawl, but as details emerge I'll know better
what I can do.

I have other commitments the first and last weekends of April and
Saturdays are generally bad for me as I have three kids playing
soccer. So I am willing to play host-- along with Rory-- on either
Sunday, April 11th or 18th. Indians generally eat lunch pretty late--
Cool Breeze doesn't even open until noon-- so I suggest we meet at the
parking lot of Chatham Square at 12:30PM. If getting out of church/
temple in time is an issue we can push it back to 1PM or later.

So everybody that wants in on this, post which of these two dates and
time work for you and we will go with the one for which the most
people are available. I'll take a final head count and call ahead to
Mr. Datta at Mithai and make arrangements for us.

P.S. Meridith, yes you're thinking of the right place.

I looked around the website to see how much of the $180 is tax deductible, and apparently none is.  I wrongly assumed some of the fee went to charity.

I've been intrigued by their concept for a while. But unless they are serving some really amazing wines I just feel it is over priced.
I've had a Brinkley Farms CSA and was very happy with their produce and meats. But for $300 for two there are so many other eating opportunities that are fantastic at much less cost.

For me the issue is not seeing a menu. And when they talk about
meats, i figure there will be more meat than I'd probably really want
to eat (sorry, I'm a wuss). But if i saw the menu, and there were
choices I could deal with (poultry, seafood, veg), I'd be very interested.

BTW, Love the term "food whore."

Hi Everyone,

I realize this is a bit late to be inviting you, but Lulu and I will
be going to the Gourmet Kingdom on Friday night (more like late
afternoon - dining with a preschooler is decidedly unhip) and would
love to have any of you join us if interested. We'll be getting there
between 5:45-6:00. If you'd like to join us, just please let me know
by about 4:30 on Friday so that I can ask for the right size table.
If you don't feel like eating with a chatty 3 year old, we'll
definitely understand, but she does love meeting new people and is
generally well-behaved. We had a great time there with Courtney

Good studying Meredith, see you later:)
Well they remembered us the last time I was at GK, so that's the big
help!

Our friends and I had dinner at GK last Friday evening and it seemed
as good as ever to me.

We were there the same night, and, aside from the service, it was
wonderful. No problem with quality.

Yea, the service has gone from "We're so glad you're here" to
alternating Clueless or Rude. And I'm a pretty easy guy to make happy
when the food rocks. So say I, right? :)

Cheers!

Our service fell on the clueless side. But in our waitress's defense,
she was obviously new, and always went to get the very helpful
manager whenever there was a question.

I didn't find the clueless waitress aggravating as she was helpful & got the manager asap. She should have had a bit of instruction in server duties, but then again the manager was great responding, so there you go. Funny you were there Sant..

Getting back to Indian Outing. Is May 2nd still a go for this? What
are the details looking like at this moment?

We were really hoping to make it to this, but a good friend is
leaving town, and picked that afternoon to have the going away party.
I'm really very sorry that we're going to miss it.

Looks like it, I'm free and Sant was okay, he's the one to make the special discussion with the sweet shop.  Do we want to make a reservation? Sant?  I'll miss you & Lulu Kari, but there is always next time.

And Lulu and I will miss getting to see Courtney too (and I think
Nancy is making it for this one?), and meeting more people (Lulu's on
the social side). And, of course, the food!

Looks like we are a go for May 2nd and have some other foodie friends who are interested as well.  Do we have a time?  Itinerary?

I am embarrassed and apologetic for doing this but I must cancel the
Indian outing this Sunday. A family matter has come up that requires
by goingt to FL (where my parents are). I hope the folks who planned
to attend this Sunday can come to the June 6th outing instead. I hope
you guys can forgive me.

Hows this ... I beg for some alternative date to replace this one,
since I'll be out of town on June 6th? Anyone else interested in a
late June date?

I hope that things are ok with the family situation. We've all been
there, and we all, I'm sure, understand the cancellation.

Santanu;
I had to cancel because of family issues too. I imagine everyone here absolutely understands. So please do not feel badly, we'll all get together in June with all the people who can come:)
see you

We will be in NYC in late May/ early June and not sure we will be back on the 6th, but might be able to make it.
