IF you perform your updates in iTunes, it is possible to save the downloaded ipsw installer file (if you know where it is on your computer) and re-use it later, so yes, it is legal to re-use that installer for your own personal devices (people with multiple devices to update can avoid having to download the installer multiple times this way). However, once or if Apple stops signing that ipsw for your hardware, it will no longer work, and will be effectively unuseable at that point.

IF you download an ipsw file from anywhere else or through any means other than iTunes, you are accessing an illegally distributed copy of proprietary software. Apple does not make ipsw file downloads available to the general public other than through iTunes. In these cases, no, it is illegal as the software you are using was illegally distributed.

If you obtain the IPSW file from Apple's servers, which while not officially supported by Apple is possible to obtain via direct download rather than through iTunes, then yes, it's legal and relatively risk-free as long as you take care to get the correct file for your device. Use of such files does not require jailbreaking; the update is installed through iTunes and works just as if iTunes downloaded it.

If you obtain the file from anyone else or any site other than Apple's own servers, then it is an illegally-pirated copy and in addition is highly risky since you don't know what the file actually contains.

They do, actually, though they don't publicize it. Apple support techs will actually sometimes direct users to those servers for direct download of the update file in cases where for some reason iTunes can't download the update itself.

Hi bro, I want to update my Ipad 2, but Mr. Itunes is stopping the download because some kind of network problem.
My internet is not super fast, but is very consistent so I want to know if there's a way of download it outside of Itunes but legally?

-tried updating directly from itunes , after the download finished the phone rebooted and i got the progress bar on white screen reached the middle and screen goes black , waited for it to come to live again but it didn't , tried pushing power button , connect to itunes appear , tried connecting to itunes message is : iphone needs to be restored , start all over again , itunes update does the same mid-progress bar shutdown , while trying by holding shift and selecting ipsw file to update says firmware is not correct

Help, recently sold my mac so now using my partners old pc running vista, my iphone is stuck in recovery mode, whenever I try plugging it into itunes it starts to restore but then I always get an error message at about 40% complete. I am trying to download an ipsw so I can try and restore the phone without itunes. I have tried downloading from various sites, the download always gets to 320mb and stops, I tried various suggestions from search engines but no joy. I asked Microsoft they said it's an apple issue.

Tried different web browsers, different sites to download from, different ipsw's from ranging from around 800mb to about 1.2gb, always gets to 320mb and acts as though the download is complete. I also plugged my partners iphone into the pc and tried to do an update but again started updating on itunes then stopped about half way. I'm not the most technical but I've even learnt about hosts file and ran a fix it to reset it, ran a registry fix it, I'm out of ideas, the only other thing I can do is try a friends computer, but I would prefer to be able to get the pc I'm using to work, some genius most know why it gets stopping at 320mb? There is over 26gb available on the hard drive!

Thanks for reply, I'm trying itunes but just won't work, that's why I've been trying to download ipsw manually, my partners iphone is fine but when I tried to update her software using itunes again it gets so far and stops! Latest version of itunes is installed! I'm guessing the same issue that is stopping me from downloading manually is the same issue with itunes.

DON'T TRY TO DO IT WITHOUT ITUNES. Any IPSW you find on the Internet may be hacked, infected with a virus or trojan, may be the wrong version for your phone, and may actually damage the hardware. You can always take it to an Apple store and they will restore it for you. Or use a different computer.

Turned firewall off, anti virus off still stops at same point, like I say even tried my partners working iphone to download 7.1.1 in itunes, than I was gonna locate the ipsw in itunes folder on pc still won't fully download

I have downloaded latest iOS on my iPhone and it's not installing. It says "no internet" while the internet is working on the device. So I decided to synchronize the iPhone and get access to the downloaded IPSW for the iOS device.

It sounds like you are trying to retrieve the ipsw file directly from the ios device because the device has already downloaded the file internally. There is no way to retrieve the ipsw file version from the iPhone itself - if you even could - it may not be compatible to work through the Mac. Instead you will need to redownload the file on the Mac instead

You can option-click "Update" instead of "Restore" in iTunes to update your phone instead of wiping and restoring it. The process is almost the same as an OTA update, except for that fact that you're reinstalling the entire OS from the ipsw file. No settings, documents, data, or apps are touched.

Note: you should always have a backup. It doesn't matter if you're doing OTA updates, ipsw updates, or just going outside with your device. If you care about the data and/or settings, back it up. In fact, I'm pretty sure iTunes will automatically back up your device before applying an update.

To set the stage, my iPhone 12 pro 128 GB doesn't have enough space for the upgrade from iOS 16->17, so OTA updates are out of the question (for the moment). I backed up my iPhone to my mac running ventura and downloaded the ipsw and held down the option key, clicked "Restore iPhone", selected the downloaded ipsw and I am greeted with a panel that reads:

Hello, I'm having a similar problem. I was going to install the iOS 17 Developer beta directly from the iPhone, but the "Beta Updates" option does not appear for me (under Automatic Updates). I have developer mode turned on, so this option should appear, but it doesn't. The iPhone is on the latest iOS 16.5 version, and an iPhone 13 Pro. I don't even have the option to download the public beta iOS updates.

So, I spent a lot of time researching how to do this. I understand I should back up my data and all first. (done), next, I need to ensure I have the latest version of iTunes for Windows (Done), next I need to download the ios 8.4.1 ipsw file. This is where the problem comes in. When I download this file, its actually a file that is zipped. When I unzip the file, it extracts into several folders and files. Amongst them, I cannot find a single file that is noted as the ipsw file.

I navigate iTunes to the iPhone info screen, locate and while holding the Shift button, I activate the Restore button. At this time, I get a window pop-up asking me to point to the ipsw restore file. And as I mentioned there was no such stated file in the extracted restore zip file. For kicks, I point to each of the folders extracted from the zip file thinking maybe it would find it under a different name or something.

First, if you don't have a backup of your device saved from when you were on iOS 8.4.1 before, it won't work...it isn't possible to restore your device using a backup from newer software than what you were running.

Step 2: Download the latest iOS 8 firmware for your iPhone or iPad from this website ( ). Just like the following picture shows, this website will tell you if Apple is still 'signing' the iOS version you want to download.
Step 3: Connect your iPhone or iPad to computer with its USB cable and then launch iTunes on your computer.

Step 4: Once connected, place your iPhone or iPad to DFU mode: Press the Power and Home button for ten seconds, release the power button when you see the Apple logo appear on the screen of your iDevice and keep pressing the home button until an iTunes window pops up and says "iTunes has detected an iPhone (iPad) in recovery mode. You must restore this device before it can be used with iTunes."

And 'yes', I did make a backup of my iPhone before upgrading to ios 9. So, I was covered there. After renaming the .zip extension to .ipsw, I followed the rest of the instructions as stated and all went well. And restoring my backup and all also worked like a charm.

In our digital life, there are a lot of situations that we will need to install IPSW file on iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, like, update iOS system, restore unsigned ipsw without iTunes, downgrade iOS, repair iOS issues, restore device to factory reset and so forth. At the very beginning, we'd better figure out what the IPSW is.

IPSW file is the raw iOS software for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, which is normally used in iTunes to install iOS firmware. And iTunes utilizes the IPSW file format to store iOS firmware to restore any device to its original state. In the following, we will show you how to install iOS manually with IPSW.

Have you met situations like, iTunes won't let you restore iPhone from IPSW file, or your iPhone/ipad might got stuck when you are trying to restore or update them from IPSW, or see an error when using iTunes? You can try to restore iPhone from IPSW without iTunes by using iPhone restore tool - UltFone iOS System Repair, a profesional IPSW restore tool that empowers you to restore iPhone/iPad with the latest IPSW file and thus fix various iOS system issues like iPhone black screen of death, Apple logo loop, iPhone frozen, iPhone stuck in recovery mode, and more.
