Here's an update from our tech team, which hopefully means nb will come back up some time tonight.

The problem with the storage front end, which is the core of today's
outage, has been resolved. Most services are still not back up, however,
as the virtualization layer above the storage still needs to be remedied.

This is less serious then the initial storage issue, but we're still
looking on the scale of several hours before things start coming
back. Some services may start coming back tonight, with all systems
restored by the morning.

We are sorry for the interruption in service and appreciate the patience.

Sincerely,

The Infrastructure Group

Glad to hear nb.mit.edu is back up.  Any thoughts on why this pdf won't render in nb?  It's a photocopy of a book chapter (images) saved as pdf.

FYI, taking the file and running it through pdf2ps and the ps2pdf allowed nb to render the file properly.  Is there a known nb incompatibility with some version of Adobe Acrobat?
