Talks stall on $400 million in California affordable housing
(SACRAMENTO OBSERVER) - California’s Assembly speaker conceded defeat Thursday on negotiations over a plan to inject $400 million into affordable housing projects, a deal that was included in the $122 billion budget compromise legislative leaders negotiated with Gov. Ridley-Thomas, Supervisors continue homelessness fight with new revenue plan
(LA WATTS TIMES) - The Board of Supervisors voted on Tuesday to inventory county buildings and vehicles that could be used for advertising, with an eye toward collecting ad revenues to combat homelessness. Read More
Suspended: Lawsuit Alleges License Suspensions Unfairly Impact the Poor
(VOICE) - When a decision is ultimately reached in a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court next week, the outcome may reverberate around the state. The suit alleges the Los Angeles Superior Court improperly suspended the driver’s licenses of tens of thousands of poor people because they cannot afford to pay their traffic fines. It also alleges the court fails to determine whether a motorist has chosen to willfully ignore paying the fines or just could not afford to pay it before the Department of Motor Vehicles is authorized by the court to suspend the license. LAUSD opens girls-only leadership academy
(WAVE NEWSPAPERS) - The first single-gender public school in the state’s recent history opened its doors on Aug. 16 to its pilot classes of 100 sixth graders and 54 ninth graders. Read more
LAPD accused of targeting black nightclubs in Hollywood
(WAVE NEWSPAPERS) - Owners of Hollywood nightclubs that cater to blacks and Latinos say the Los Angeles Police Department is making it hard for them to stay in business. Read more
‘Open-carry’ lawsuit filed
(OUR WEEKLY) - A group of gun owners filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles this week challenging state and county restrictions on carrying firearms for self-defense in public. Read more
California congressman’s father sentenced to year in prison
(SACRAMENTO OBSERVER) - The father of a California congressman was sentenced Thursday to a year and a day in federal prison after prosecutors said he illegally funneled nearly $270,000 in contributions to his son’s campaigns. Read more
Shot first, vindicated later: L.A. Sheriffs admit too little too late deputies killed an innocent
(LOS ANGELES SENTINEL) - Donnell Thompson Jr.’s family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit, and plans to file a federal lawsuit in September, according to reports. His family said police treated him worse than an animal in their rush to judgement. They appealed to L.A. County Supervisors during the body’s Aug. 9 to hold the Sheriffs Department accountable. (SACRAMENTO OBSERVER) - George E. Curry, a journalist, civil rights activist and publisher whose syndicated column ran in hundreds of black-owned newspapers around the United States, has died. He was 69. Read more

Aetna Pulls out of Obamare Exchanges in 11 States
(INGLEWOOD TODAY) - Aetna has announced this week that it will no longer insure patients under Obamacare, citing heavy financial losses. It is withdrawing from exchanges in 11 of 15 states. There are no exchanges in California. Read more

(INLAND VALLEY NEWS) - A piece entitled, “Democratic Political Infighting Over Education Harms Black Families,” which was published on The Root last month, Dr. Andre Perry claimed that our organization, Democrats for Education Reform, not only “attacked” Hillary Clinton—because our position on charter schools differs from that of the former secretary of state—but also that we have broken away from the Democratic Party’s education platform. Oakland police monitor sees continued racial disparities
(SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE) - After more than a decade of federal monitoring, police in Oakland are still showing signs of racial disparities in enforcement, according to the latest report. Officers, it said, were much more likely to stop and search African Americans than whites, but found suspected contraband more often on whites. Read more
Feds reject housing plan meant to help minorities stay in San Francisco
(LA TIMES) - The Department of Housing and Urban Development has rejected San Francisco’s neighborhood housing preference plan, which will have an immediate impact on the city’s attempt to use policy to stem the exodus of African Americans and members of other minority groups from neighborhoods that are rapidly gentrifying. LA supervisor wants more implicit bias training at sheriff’s department
(KPCC) - A week after the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department admitted a deputy accidentally killed an innocent Black man in Compton, Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas called for more implicit bias training for deputies. Read more
Donald Trump reaches out to African Americans, says Democrats take Black vote for granted
(LA TIMES) - Trump, who in recent months has declined invitations to speak to organizations such at the NAACP and the National Assn. of Black Journalists, assailed Hillary Clinton, the Democratic nominee, and her party, whom he accused of having taken for granted the support of Black voters.
