“Instead of making race-relations ‘issues of controversy’ awaiting adjudication and legal wins or losses, we need to make race-relations ‘opportunities of grace’ where we value one another as equals and adhere to the words of Christ – ‘In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets.’” NASB Matthew 7:12. - qmiles

Celebrate the past to make change smoother

One reason people resist change: The thought of doing things differently

One reason people resist change: The thought of doing things differently can sometimes imply that they’ve been doing things wrong up to now. To get beyond this misconception, start by recognizing their feelings. Tell your employees something like, “For a long time, this organization did well because we did a great job of doing X. But things have changed, and right now doing X, even as well as we’ve been doing it, isn’t working anymore. So we’ve got to learn to do Y.” Basing your discussion on the victories of the past can help guide your team toward the future.

FAA to Boost Pilot Professional Development

FEMALEPILOTPIC
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has proposed to enhance the professional development of U.S. air carrier pilots to make certain that they adhere to standard procedures and prevent behavior which could lead to pilot errors. The rule would require leadership and command training, and mentoring training for pilots-in-command. It would also require each air carrier to establish a committee to develop, administer, and oversee formal pilot mentoring programs. “Pilots have an enormous responsibility for the safety of their passengers and crew,” said FAA Administrator Michael Huerta. “We have some of the best pilots in the world and should take full advantage of our pilot’s wealth of experience to raise professional standards and cockpit discipline.”  Learn more at:  https://my.faa.gov/focus/articles/2016/10/FAA_to_Boost_Pilot_P.html?origin=broadcast-featured

Interviewing for Success:

Although conducting interviews is discretionary, they can be an integral part of the hiring process.  For some hiring managers, interviews can be a cumbersome experience, while others see interviews as a great opportunity to get to know a potential new employee, find out more about their experiences, and share with them the benefits of working for the FAA.  The mindset of the hiring manager during the interview can impact the candidate’s perception of the FAA or the organization as a workplace of choice. Recent changes to the FAA Interview Policy EMP-1.8 and related supplement and reference material provide updated guidance to hiring managers on conducting interviews, checking references, and using additional assessment tools (e.g., writing samples and tests) to further evaluate candidates for a position.  We encourage you to become familiar with the revised policy prior to conducting your next interview.  Successful interviews and assessment processes go beyond the act of filling a vacancy; they impact the workforce of the future. If you have questions, please contact your servicing Human Resource Division.  Learn more at: https://my.faa.gov/focus/articles/2016/08/Interviewing_for_Suc.html?origin=broadcast-focus

The Best Time to Retire:

Are you planning to retire in 2017?  If so, you should review the best dates to retire under CSRS, CSRS Offset and FERS for next year. Federal employees can retire the day they become eligible or any day thereafter, but there are some days that are better than others to choose as your date of final separation from government.  Here are some things to consider if you’re contemplating retiring in 2017: If you’re a FERS employee, you may not be retiring with as much service as retirees under CSRS. Someone with five or 10 years of service will have a different motivation for selecting a retirement date than someone with 30 or 40 years of service. Forfeiting a month of retirement based on five or 10 years of service will have less of an impact than foregoing one based on a full career. Coordinating your TSP and Social Security benefits could provide you with more flexibility in choosing a retirement date. There are as many reasons for someone to retire in June as there are in January, March or November. Think about what is motivating you to retire, and whether you want to continue working a little longer. Consider two or three different dates during the year and run the numbers for each of them. The Benefits Operations Center can provide you with a retirement estimate for two different dates and you may submit a request every six months.  Learn more at: https://my.faa.gov/focus/articles/2016/10/Best_Dates_to_Retire.html?origin=broadcast-focus

Keep your brain in shape for top performance

Here’s how to whip your mind into shape and keep it running smoothly

You and your employees need the full power of your brains to do good work. Here’s how to whip your mind into shape and keep it running smoothly:
• Stay hydrated. Don’t depend on coffee, soda, or energy drinks to keep you going. They can actually dehydrate you, robbing you of energy. Drink lots of water or decaffeinated tea and eat fruits and vegetables to give your brain the water it needs to function well.
• Meditate daily. You don’t have to get into the lotus position and concentrate on your mantra to meditate effectively. Just spend a few minutes each day in a quiet place with your eyes closed, letting your mind relax. You’ll feel refreshed and able to tackle new challenges.
• Exercise regularly. Your brain as well as your body will benefit from a daily exercise routine. When you’re in good physical shape, your brain gets more blood and oxygen, and you’re better able to cope with stress.
• Do puzzles. A 10-minute break to do a crossword puzzle or a Sudoku can give stimulate your brain and strengthen your memory. It may also delay the onset of age-related dementia later in life.
• Switch to green tea. Studies suggest that green tea, which has some caffeine as well as antioxidants, can have a positive impact on cognitive function and memory.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month - PINK RIBBONEvery year, too many Americans are touched by the pain and hardship caused by breast cancer -- a disease that, among women, is not only one of the most common cancers, but also one of the leading causes of cancer-related death. During National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we honor all those who lost their lives to breast cancer, and we recognize the courageous survivors who are still fighting it. For these individuals, and for their loved ones who give their unwavering support during the most trying times, we recommit ourselves to the essential and necessary work of forging a future free from cancer in all its forms.  Hundreds of thousands of Americans will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, and tens of thousands will lose their battle with this disease. Although both women and men can have breast cancer, women are at higher risk. Women with a family history of breast cancer, or those who are older or obese, are also more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer. I encourage all women to find out if they are at increased risk and to learn more about recommended screenings by speaking with their health care providers and by visiting www.Cancer.gov/Breast. - President Barack Obama  Read the full Presidential Proclamation declaring October 2016 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Learn more at: https://my.faa.gov/focus/articles/2016/10/National_Breast_Canc.html?origin=broadcast-focus

Recognizing two NBCFAE Peers- submitted by Gloria McRae, ACE ERT

I am very fortunate to work with the Central Region NBCFAE employees who are all outstanding.   I would like to take the time to personally praise both Cora Lyons and Nardos Wills.  I cannot say enough about their commitment, the excellence they both have achieved in their careers, their positive outlook and influence, and the way they both reach out to challenge you to achieve more.  Both have been members of the NBCFAE for several years.  Both are very loyal and productive members.  They share the vision of the NBCFAE of “Let each become all they are capable of being”.  Both encourage others and help fellow employees to try to achieve their goals.  They also share information that is useful to help with promotions and leadership positions.  I was encouraged by each of them to become a member of the NBCFAE and to participate in activities that the NBCFAE has sponsored, to apply for jobs, to take advantage of training and opportunities that came along, and to promote the NBCFAE to other employees and management.  It has been a rewarding experience.

Cora Lyons                                                      Nardos Wills

Cora Lyons has been a member of the NBCFAE since 1994.  She has had over 30 years of government service and is a Management and Program Analyst with the Small Airplane Directorate, a position that she has held for several years.  She held the President’s position and hosted the NBCFAE Conference in the Central Region in 2009.  She encourages everyone to become a member because she believes that it is such a great organization and because of the positive experiences she has had with the organization.   Cora is a doer.  She organizes and plans everything.  She is not one to sit around and wait for anything to get done, she takes action and gets it done right away.  You never have to wait on Cora.  Her check-list is already checked and completed.   She has been the Assistant National Conference Coordinator for two years and has done an excellent job.  She is serious regarding her roles and commitments; whether it is with the NBCFAE or any other role she assumes.  No matter what she does, whether working on a project, coordinating, planning, or whatever is needed, Cora always does an outstanding job.  Cora has received many special achievement and leadership awards that speak of her excellence, many of which have come from the NBCFAE.   Because of her encouragement, others have joined and have taken leadership roles.  I would have to say that Cora definitely brings all she has to the organization.  Her dedication, commitment, skills, and values all speak for themselves.  I am honored to call Cora a fellow NBCFAE member and a co-worker in the Central region.

Nardos Wills has been a forceful but quiet instrumental influence in the Central Region NBCFAE.  Nardos has been a member since 2005 and she has worked for the FAA for 12 years as an engineer.   She was the treasurer in our region for two consecutive terms.   She has worked hard to bring the NBCFAE to the forefront for the FAA, improving employee-management relations.  She is a mentor and has taken under her wing several new FAA employees to mentor; one of whom has become an officer in the Central Region NBCFAE.   She has assisted and trained new employees to become more efficient and knowledgeable in their employment with the FAA.  Nardos is a true professional and she takes her roles seriously whether as a mentor, treasurer, or her current role in keeping the Central Region website up to date.   She believes that mentorship starts early and has volunteered on many occasions to go out to schools for outreach to teach young people and educate them regarding the FAA and the many opportunities at the agency.   She encouraged me to join when I came on board to the FAA.   Nardos believes in everything that the NBCFAE stands for and has for many years participated in all Coalition events.   I personally admire her ability to do so much with her employment here at the FAA, her volunteering and her responsibility for raising her own young people.   It shows just how much she cares and how serious she is regarding her role at the Coalition.  Nardos puts her skills, her knowledge and her talents to work in support of the organization and is always willing to help.  I am so glad to be part of a region where I am working with people who are so dedicated and achieve excellence in all they do.

Praise Your NBCFAE Peer - Do you know a NBCFAE Members who’s a leader, who models collaboration and trust? Are you part of a team that takes strides to work across  LOBs, staff offices and service units to support the FAA mission? Let us know about someone you know or a team you're in that’s working safer, smarter, better, together. We’ll publish your submission in the monthly ERT Newsletter so that you can Praise Your NBCFAE Peer. You're welcome to answer any or all of the following questions to include with your submission:
How does this member help make the FAA safer, smarter, better, together? Can you share an example/short story of when this member went above and beyond in support of the FAA mission?  Why does this member/being on this organization make you smile?
