This is going to be fascinating to see unfold over the next few seasons. A few preliminary questions/thoughts:

  1. I heard ESPN talking heads talk about the Knicks adapting the triangle offense. The thought hadn't even crossed my mind that the President of a team would influence coaching to such a degree.
  2. Phil Jackson always had an abundance of talent to work with. The Knicks have an aging core in Melo and Chandler. Maybe.
  3. Phil Jackson did not coach during the era of analytics. I think it's fair to say the rise of analytics has had and will continue to have a huge impact on the NBA. How will Phil Jackson deal with this? Is he ready for or receptive towards it?

On the third point,Phil's a smart guy, and I would imagine that a good part of the reason he has been successful is that he's had his teams do smart things. The analytics probably back those being smart things, so that's the least of my concerns, aside from stuff like his previously stated disdain for the corner 3.

I'm a little skeptical about Jackson making a huge difference with the Knicks until at least a couple years. I think Woodson has done such a horrible job that wants to hire a coach that is his "disciple" to implement the triangle. There's rumors that Steve Kerr really wants to coach and will coach the Knicks next year. The Knicks aren't too old. Stoudamire and Chandler are expiring contracts next year and Melo will only be 31. The 2015 FA class has Kevin Love, Lebron, Aldridge, etc. Phil will likely attract at least one big name in my opinion.

I still think Phil is overrated. He had MJ in hi first run of titles and then had Shaq and Kobe in the early 2000's then had a STACKED Lakers team in his last 2 titles.

The way the Lakers got swept by the Mavs in 2011 tarnished Phil's reputation. They had Kobe, Pau, Bynum, Odom and got swept by the Mavs. I think thats inexcusable but it seems like nobody wants to remember that.

I think that Phil will have a positive impact. While analytics will have a increasingly important role, they're not there yet, nearly to the point of providing evaluation over a (good) scout. It's still difficult to parse out a player's contribution from his coaching, environment, and teammates. So for player evaluation (as opposed to just measuring contribution for a player in a specific situation), they'll miss out somewhat on analytics but not tremendously.

From the standpoint of player recruitment, it could be huge.

Triangle offense is legit. It may not be cool around the league to say you're running the triangle, but ultimately it's just an offense with a lot of intelligent motion, and the Knicks would benefit from it.

Another angle is that there is someone in management who theoretically has the stature to challenge Dolan's supposed involvement in basketball operations - so even if Phil isn't a savior, if this alone is true it is a positive.

Anyone want to revisit this subject?

Revisit what, initial questions or "failure" of team this year?
Imo it's all crystal clear. If you read his books or his interviews at SSC, there's two key points to him as a bball person: he's bending truth to his advantage through his philosophy stuff and his philosophy stuff and approach (aka patience and balls to do some things) correlate with very important things necessary for a winning team.
Notable results of first side is that team has failed to live up to expectations. Expectations that Phil Jackson = team winning, however fucked up the team is. It's one thing to write that he taught Kobe how to communicate and be a leader. It's the other to actually have Kobe and MJ, who will digg through pile of  shit to be the best. Or have Rodman/Shaq, who can treat bball lightly, but still dominate through unreal physical gifts and good mood. It's another thing to teach guy like Melo. Why is he still the silent leader? Where's his Fisher, who he can count on to be a co-leader? And despite Phil understanding that they need these type of guys, truth is that he and DFIsh as coach can't make good team out of ill fitted players. So they need to find them. As a GM he bring two positives to a team. More patience and understanding of basic for a winning team. That's where his second side comes in as a positive. He knows team needs depth and unselfishness. By unselfishness I mean ability to sacrifice desire of every signle man to want best for himself in everything. All his phylosphical bs is about that, tricking guys into that right mind state. Kobe was far from unselfish on the floor, but he was in his attitude. He had time to spend all his millions and do all kind of shit in hi off time, but instead he spent them practising. Benchers were "unselfish" in playing time demands, Pau was with his playstyle etc. Different way, different variations but same results. Rodman partied all night to have "mood" and play great games, but J.R. Smith was sent to Cleveland because he couldn't stay away from parties and wasn't able to play next day. So he understand what needs to be done and it's just the matter of time and luck if he can deliver. Signing free agents and upcoming draft come to mind in luck category. And I don't get what the fuss is about analytics again. These stupid wars are bringing the worst out of "nerds". To shoot 3's (and corner 3's especially) you need all the things that are key to triangle (ball movement, off the ball movement, exploiting matchups and coverage switches). And if the right specialist will be available, he will get him. There were a lot of those guys on Lakers bench through the years, for Phil not to like them or what they do on the court.
So it all depends on offseason moves. Top draft pick to PF slot + Gasol jr and Matthews? How about dem apples.

This is even better two years later, in light of Kristaps/coaching change/emphasis on coaching candidates who are either triangle-centric or seem willing to work within the triangle framework. The pitch for potentially coaching only the home games, too - whew, boy.
