The trailhead for Apple Orchard Falls and the Cornelius Creek Trails, located at the end of North Creek Road (Forest Road 59), will be closed temporarily due to trail maintenance for two weeks. An alternate parking location is available at the Apple Orchard Falls trailhead located at the Sunset Field Overlook (milepost 78) on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Sections of both Apple Orchard Falls Trail (#17) and Cornelius Creek Trail (#18) will be accessible to hikers during this trail maintenance, both of which may be reached from the trailhead on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The sections of Cornelius Creek Trail (#18) that will be open during this time are the Cornelius Creek Spur Trail (#18A) and the section southeast of the Spur Trail’s intersection with Cornelius Creek Trail (#18). These two adjacent sections may be connected with the Appalachian Trail to create a loop which leads back to the Apple Orchard Falls trailhead on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Much of the Apple Orchard Falls Trail will be accessible during this maintenance, except for the section after the Trail’s intersection with the Apple Tree Road (FDR #3034), which will be closed.
Over time, trails become worn down due to a combination of both human use and natural forces. Trails that are not well-maintained can become hazardous to hikers and may increase erosion and other negative environmental impacts.
By performing regular trail maintenance, the Forest Service is continuing its mission to provide sustainable recreation for all users.
