Man to be sentenced in gas-and-dash death of Alberta gas station owner
WETASKIWIN, Alta. — A man who pleaded guilty to manslaughter after an Alberta gas station owner was killed in a gas-and-dash is to be sentenced today in the Court of Queen's Bench.
Mitchell Robert Sydlowski, who is 29, was charged with second-degree murder but he pleaded guilty to the lesser offence — as well as failing to remain at the scene of a fatal accident — in August.
An agreed statement of facts submitted in the case said 54-year old Ki Yun Jo was killed after Sydlowski sped off in a stolen cube van without paying for $198 of fuel.
It happened outside Jo's Fas Gas station in Thorsby, about 70 kilometres southwest of Edmonton, on Oct. 6, 2017.
A witness saw Jo hanging onto the van's passenger side mirror and, when the vehicle swerved, he was tossed to the ground and run over.
The Crown recommended a sentence of six to eight years, while Sydlowski's defence lawyer suggested it should be at the lower end of the Crown's recommendation because of his client's guilty pleas.
Shortly after Jo's death, the Alberta government moved to bring in legislation requiring drivers to prepay before filling up at gas stations.

As a former gas jockey 8 years is way to lenient. We were told at Stanley Park Chevron (long since closed) by Raffi Kaynar the owner to chase after drive aways. The station had a pre-pay policy after 10pm and I remember customers complaining." This isn't New York City". A couple of years after I quit two ppl were killed at the gas station. We used to give the cops who did their paperwork in the parking lot free donuts because we liked them hanging around.
When I was in New Brunswick with my RV I had a brain cramp at a Shell station and left without paying. There were some bikers at the place and they must have told the owner I was okay. He drove 20 miles to the Bay Of Fundy parking lot where I was parked waited however long until I returned to my rig and politely asked for the money. I was totally embarressed and paid up on the spot and insisted he take an extra twenty for his trouble. These ppl have contracts that force them to pay a percentage of their candy sales to corporate hq and are lucky to get 3 cents a liter for the gas they sell. The Bay Of Fundy has the highest tide differentials in the world and if you get the chance visit it.
