I noticed Naviter is offering a SIM card and data plans. A monthly subscription is $18 for 30 GB. How is 30 GB useful? I use an $8/month plan with 2 GB, and have never exceeded that amount.

I'm with you. I have a 2GB plan for $6/month and never come close to using it.

I used 0.5 GB over a whole season which implies that only a tiny amount of data is needed while flying - my device is connected to wifi at home or on the airfield. That may be because I don't get a good signal! There is an earlier thread on sim cards.

I would add that I bought a card with preloaded data valid for 24 months - which was much better value than any pay monthly plan.

Do you look at satellite images? I suspect that uses much more data than forecast and OGN updates, or sending IGC files to OLC/Weglide at the end of the flight.

Where did you get that card? I didn't see anything like that. I can pause the subscription of my current SIM during the winter, and that reduces the yearly cost.

Hi guys, thanks for this thread.

None of you have a Naviter SIM card yet. If you're on the latest beta version, the teaser for it is in Settings > Naviter SIM card. We should have omitted the pricing for this feature - it's not yet final at the moment.

The Naviter SIM card will be different than a regular SIM card in that it is SIM card that it is not limited to one network provider. It connects to the best one available at your location. AT&T, T-Mobile, and several others are supported in the US at the moment.

More info will follow through our social media channels.

Well, that explains why I hadn't heard of it before 😛

My current SIM is $8/month for 2GB (which expires after 30 days), and it uses the Verizon/T-Mobile/AT&T networks, supposedly selecting the one with the best signal. It can also be "paused" for a month or more, which I do during the winter - no charges when paused. So far, 2GB has been plenty of data.

I'd switch to a Naviter SIM if the pricing was similar, and/or if it had some other useful features. One feature might be adding unused data to the next month instead expiring, but that's all I can think of right now.

And, since satellite images is my main interest for having a SIM card: It would really help my understanding of weather progression if a three image loop was displayed instead a single image. Skysight does that, using images that are 10 minutes apart. A static image that updates at random intervals (and doesn't even have a time stamp) is good, but a time lapse would be great!

This one:
is good for 24 months, and only costs $10.  But, it is not clear whether it allows 1GB (as in the title) or 50 GB (as in the text in two places).  Even if only 1 GB, this may be a fine SIM card if you only want limited data (not satellite maps), or to use an old phone (if "unlocked") to run IGCdroid for real time tracking.  Even if it only lasts you one season. The "activation" concept of this SIM card is opaque to me - what does it mean "connect [the device] to your phone" etc?

The sellers of these cards buy wholesale roaming time on US carriers like AT&T or T-Mobile.  When using such a card with a phone, you have to have an unlocked phone with a SIM slot in which to insert the card.   There is a place in the settings on the phone to choose which carrier you want to use.  Then you select or type in the Access Point Name (APN), which tells the US carrier how to route the data.  The data route through China, so it isn't really snappy.  But it is a cheap way to get data-only access.   I run SeeYou Navigator on an unlocked Samsung phone, and it works fine.  I also run a free power airplane app called Avare on the same platform.  Avare has much of the functionality of ForeFlight.

The seller of that SIM card clarified that it is only 1GB.  Oh well.

This is the card I'll try next year - 15GB for a year; Verizon/T-Mobile/AT&T networks; $36/year

It's $25 cheaper than my current SIM card, if I use it only for the 7 month soaring season; $60 cheaper if used during the entire year.

That sounds like a good find, Eric.  Please let us know how it works once you start testing it.

I am using the one Eric mentioned above for $36/year -- but in an old phone I am using as an ADS-B In display, not an Oudie N.  I have a second one in a car Infotainment system (Porsche Cayenne).  Works OK in both.  Not super snappy, since the data routes through China.

Alternative: WiFi hotspot. I tried two different SIM cards/plans and neither worked properly. Using my Pixel phone as a hotspot routinely failed, probably because of my cheapo service plan. Solution was to buy a portable hotspot/router "brick" which can be had for as little as $30. Last fall, got lucky and bought a T-mobile hotspot on sale with 200 Gb/year for 5 years, prepaid. Cost all of $35 (!). (Wireless carriers want you to dump your home wired internet connection in favor of their 5G, so they often have special sale prices.) Rock solid connection so far, plus I can also use it in flight simultaneously with my iPad or on the ground with my laptop.
