Ok guys, if you are using a data sim card, what are you using, and how much data do you really need for Oudie N?

It looks like everything else, you can easily pay for way more than you need.

Actual real world experience is appreciated.

Thanks

I use a "Smart Sim" SIM card I bought from Amazon, about $10. I use a 2GB plan that's $8/month, and it's been plenty. 1 GB might enough, but it was only $2 more for 2GB. Once you have the SIM card, you go to their website to select the plan:

Website: https://topup.smartsimshop.com

The website is a bit confusing. Their contact: in...@smartsimtech.com

Some of the folks around Moriarty have been using a sim card from Tello with similar pricing.

Hi Kevin -
Last year I used a SIM from tello.com for $6/month.  Tello is a reseller of T-Mobile.  It worked OK, but the T-Mobile coverage in my area is spotty.  So this year, I will be trying a card from spectrumsim.com for $10/month.  They advertise that they can switch among AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile.  As someone who travels to fly, I found this attractive.  It works on the ground here, which is nice.  No flight experience with it yet.  If it isn't noticeably better, I'll go back to Tello.

Tello supports SMS messages on the Oudie N, and Spectrum SIM does not.  I don't care about that.

1 GB per month is plenty.

Smart Sim also uses AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. Verizon has the best "boonie" coverage, according to the RV motorhome people.

I just did some searching on Amazon and couldn't find any sim cards available from a company called "Smart Sim".  I see LOTS of sim cards but just not that one.  Are they maybe not on amazon any longer?

I can't find it, either, but it might be available from other vendors or directly. This one on Amazon looks good, if I am reading it right:

https://a.co/d/hyjSuh1

$30 for 6 months, 12GB total. That's $5 and 2 GB a month, average. Six months might be enough for the entire season.

I didn't realize the sim cards for data were so inexpensive.  What are you all benefiting most from having that capability.  Real time weather maybe(?) but what else? - Curt 95

Seems like someone should've answered you by now, but they haven't, so for me, I really like the current satellite images. It helps with planning my route as I fly, and let's me watch the weather at home, so I can turn around in time. Auto matically updated Skysight wave, wind, and convergence forecasts can be useful, too, even though my Oudie N does cache the forecasts in the morning. It also keeps Oudie N connected to OGN when there is no OGN server in range, as long as there is cell service.

So, definitely worth the money ($8/month for my plan).

I bought the card below 15 gb over a year on three carriers for $60.    I will report back after I use it for a while.  Seemed to be the best deal.  I dont know if the 15 gb for the year is enough, but looked like a good place to start.

I bought a Spectrum Smart Data Only SIM Card for use in my Oudie N IGC.  The pricing was great.  I received it quickly, and was able to activate it, but it doesn't seem to be working.  I have sent a note to the provided support email.  I imagine I have a setting wrong.  The instructions and diagnostics on the support website are mediocre.  Below is the feedback from the diagnostic page, but I can't seem to match the suggestions to actual settings in the Oudie N.

The SIM is correctly provisioned. It is not registered on the network currently, and there is no record of a historic registration date and/or it has not been registered recently. The SIM is currently not in a data session.
Possible reasons for provision failure:
SIM State is not correct. Check whether the SIM status is On
Possible reasons for network failure:
Confirm that the device is on. Power cycle the device if possible.
Possible reasons for live data failure:
APN not configured properly. Check that the device has been configured with the correct APN.
The device is unable to open ports or sockets. Verify all sockets and ports on the device are closed and free to use.
IP address is incorrect. Verify the destination IP address is accurate.
Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Paul Remde

Please pardon my Captain Obvious question, but does your location have cell service for the provider of the SIM card?

Hi Paul -
I have the same SIM.  I remember I had to choose "puffin" as my Access Point Name.
Android Settings -> Network & internet -> Mobile network -> Advanced -> Access Point Names

I hope this helps.

I got the card below just before the  Region 5N contest.  Flew a couple of days at home with it.  It is a 3 service cart 15GB over a year.

With two practice days and 3 contest days plus the bit I used it before, I just used 375 GB of data.  Seemed like a good deal, and is working fairly well as far as I can tell.  I could download satellite and see the clouds. and wind ....

And it was plug and play, just cut on the use date button

Hi,

It's working fine now.  I expected it to have great service in my home since my phone has a good connecting using Verizon, and the SpectrumSim card supports Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile networks.  It works in my home, if I move to some areas of my house.  I look forward to trying it at the gliderport.

I ordered it here: https://spectrumsim.com/ .

Best Regards,

Paul Remde

I guess Captain Obvious was right after all.

Does your phone show poor signal strength in the rooms that Oudie N doesn't get cell service? If so, that might be a way for pilots to check for adequate cell service when trying a SIM card in their Oudie N.

Hi Eric,

it was strange.  The Oudie N was showing several bars of mobile data connection, yet it wouldn't connect to a website or download updates.  But when I took it outside, it must have made a better connection and worked fine.

Best Regards,

375 GB seems like a lot. Did you have to pay extra for the service?

I'm sure he meant MB, not GB.
