Using either the Oudie N or SeeYou on my phone winds frequently takes a very long time to display. Is there a trick I have overlooked?  Zigzags?  Turns?  One? Two?

31 minutes into a wave flight today (upper left next to battery percentage)

Finally winds at 36 minutes while descending to land (I am not entirely sure when it updated after prior screenshot). It didn't update again for the next two pattern tows.

Thank you for your guidance,

I haven't used Navigator in wave flying, but I believe it uses circling to derive the wind on it's own. If it's connected to a vario or other instrument that can provide wind, it will display that, or if the vario, etc, sends a compass or TAS information, it can calcuate the wind without circling.

Hi Colleen,

If the Oudie N (or SeeYou Navigator on a  phone) is not connected to an external source of data, like an LXNAV S8, S80, S10, or S100 vario, then the Oudie N will calculate the wind using GPS data only - and only when circling.  it takes several circles to be able to calculate the wind accurately.

If the Oudie N is getting airspeed data from an external source (like and LXNAV vario), then it will use the airspeed data from the vario together with its own GPS data to calculate the wind.  Note that it doesn't receive or use the wind information sent by the vario.  Since both GPS position and airspeed vector (both magnitude and direction) are used together, the Oudie N (or SeeYou Navigator on a phone) can calculate the wind more precisenly, and it doesn't need to wait until you circle.  It just needs 2 or more slightly different ground tracks to calculate the wind.

At least, that is my understanding of how the Oudie N and SeeYou Navigator calculate the wind.  I'm pretty sure I'm correct, but not 100% certain.

Thanks for the info, Eric and Paul! In the 27 and 302, where I've got an S100, the wind info gets updated pretty often. Unfortunately, neither the club trainer nor our Perkoz has a gadget to send GPS and airspeed data to the Oudie or phone. So if I need to check or we’re comparing wind speeds on 123.3 😆, I’ll just stop and circle around until it gets updated.

I have a slightly older LX Navigation EOS vario that can calculate wind in both straight and circling methods.
I also use the Bluetooth dongles to pass vario and flarm data to the Oudie N. Vario inputs always match up perfectly. In certain situations it doesn't seem like the wind info syncs up between the EOS and the Oudie N.

Last spring on the Sequatchie Valley Ridge the Oudie didn't show a wind update until after I had turned at the North end of the main ridge and started back South. That could be based on a lot of factors though, for example the speed or accuracy of straight line wind calcs in the EOS vario.

This is merely an observation, not a well-formed experiment to check what data is sent via Bluetooth to the Oudie N.
