This is a copy of the email I just sent to Josh and Andre at Naviter. If you like my list, I hope you will let them know you agree. If you have ideas you like better, be sure they hear from you about them!

Hello Josh and Andre,

Navigator is improving constantly, and I really appreciate that, but it still lacks a few important features, including some that it's predecessor has. The main issue is it's "2D" arrival height calculation (arrival height based on the distance and glide angle to the airport), which fails when there is a mountain in the way! A "3D" arrival height calculation that uses the intervening terrain height in it's calculations is very much needed.

There are others, such as marking a point on the map, airspace visibility, and more, that would make a good flight computer a great flight computer. Here is my prioritized list of the features I (and many others!) think should be implemented as quickly as possible. I hope you aren't too busy right now 😉

Navigator prioritized new feature list

MOST IMPORTANT: Map display of waypoints that can be reached during mountain flying

  1. One of the following would be very useful in mountain flying...
    1. Amoeba, the very best!, with two rings like ClearNav and LXNav
    2. Minimum Glide Path Height Above Terrain instead of Arrival Height
      1. In relatively flat terrain, this value would be identical to the Arrival height
      2. Mountainous terrain can block a direct glide, so a Height Above Terrain along the glide path is needed. The Height Above Terrain is [AGL - Safety Height ], and the lowest value anywhere along the glide path is displayed at the airport symbol.
      3. The ring color would be determined by the Height Above Terrain, not the Arrival Height
      4. A red dot or X would mark the points where the Height Above Terrain is negative.
    3. Side view of the glide path, so the pilot could see where it comes close to the terrain

IMPORTANT: Mark a point on the map

  • A way to Mark a new Waypoint on the map while flying, such as a thermal, a newly discovered landing field, good wave lift, etc.
  • Update TFR airspace during the day, as it becomes available, and send with inflight weather updates

VERY USEFUL: Increased Airspace visibility

  • Airspace B, C, D, MOA, and Restricted should always display (unless Disabled), regardless of Zoom or Satellite Layer selected
    • Currently, Class C, Restricted, and MOA vanish when the map is zoomed out
    • Class D should display as dashed blue line to match aeronautical maps, and not the current solid line with hatching
If Class D isn't changed, then the DZ boundary should be changed so it's not the same

USEFUL: Weather, Flarm, Simulator

  • Weather
    • Wind Profile: Forecast wind every 1000'; actual wind entered automatically and manually
    • Glide estimate uses current wind, manual wind, or wind profile along the glide path - Pilot's choice
    • OGN calculates winds from all gliders, reports it to all gliders
      • Add these winds to the Wind Profile
      • Integrate with Copilot by WeGlide, perhaps
  • Flarm: latest Flarmnet data should download automatically when connected to the internet
  • Simple Simulator for training and testing - just speed, altitude, climb rate, and direction controls needed

Hi Eric and all,

I am afraid you are missing what I consider a MOST IMPORTANT point in your the list (already notified by me to Naviter last year, but without any action): All the pages are identical, only the navboxes are different. Same map, same layout, same zoom.

With the old Oudie, each page had its own map and scale setting. This is fundamental for wave flying, especially when weak. At least 3 different page layouts seem to be necessary: 1) one for general navigation and overall airspace, nearest airfield,s large scale, with its own navboxes 2) one for task flying, with essential navboxes for managing the task and the waypoints, 3) one page for wave flying, without any map (blank) and low zoom scale for lift identification and buoys marking (when this function shall be available!)

This page can also be useful for flying very close to a critical airspace, just to be sure you stay outside. Terrain is irrelevant in this case.

All the best

I also miss the independent pages; unfortunately, I rarely get a chance to fly in wave, so that lack isn't an issue for me. Independent pages would let me quickly switch from a standard map to one with real-time satellite images, but that is in the "Useful" category.

I used the second page for my tight in thermalling page if I needed help.  Easy to click between, and you did not have to do multiple clicks to get back to your base magnification, or it did not automatically super zoom where you lost orientation to other gliders if flying while seeing others on flarm.

The FIRST THING THEY SHOULD DO IS STOP ALL DEVELOPEMENT, UNTIL THEY MAKE THE N AS CAPABLE AS THE ORIGINAL OUDIE, WITH ALL THE NAV BOXES WE HAD, AND ABLE TO CHANGE FONTS FOR DIFFERENT THINGS, AND BE ABLE TO SEE AIRSPACE WITH THE CORRECT COLORS.

The new features are nice, but the original is still a more capable glide computer in many ways.

I got a reply from Jost Napret of Naviter Support:

" All the requested features are already on our development list. I have just added your votes to each of these development tasks. Some of them are already prioritized, others will be prioritized in the future."

My suggestion: everyone, send your list of features (and their priority for you) to Naviter Support so your "vote" is recorded. Sure, it often feels like we're trying to push on a rope, but that's my best idea for now.

 I would add:
- Support of cupx file for waypoints / outlandigs
- Proper Thermal assistant (just like there was in SeeYou Mobile, or in XCSoar)

This is allegedly already inside the backlog, but I have the feeling that Naviter is focusing more on paraglider related features these days...
