JamesWan has staked out a place among the modern masters of horror, directing films like Saw, Dead Silence, Insidious, and this inspired-by-true-events chiller based on the experiences of real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. The Warrens, best known for their work on the strange case that inspired the Amityville Horror movies (which played a part in The Conjuring 2), were portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, who grounded the effective jump scares and freak-out moments with a believable world-weariness. Together, Wan and his co-leads found fresh terror in familiar genre tropes, and the end result is a sprawling cinematic universe that only continues to grow.

Welcome to the best horror movies of 2024, ranking every dark and dreary delight coming out this year by Tomatometer! We start the list with Certified Fresh films (these movies have maintained a high Tomatometer score after enough critics reviews), followed by the pulp-pounding Fresh movies (these are rated at least 60%), and then concluding with the morbidly Rotten.

May saw a few pairs, like low-performing major studio releases Tarot and The Strangers: Chapter 1, and then two critically-acclaimed audience-splitters: I Saw the TV Glow and In A Violent Nature.

New horror movies for 2024 on the horizon include They Follow (sequel to It Follows, with Maika Monroe and writer/director David Robert Mitchell returning), Terrifier 3 (Art the Clown expands his spree into Christmas), Nosferatu (from director Robert Eggers), Alien: Romulus (due in August), Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (September), Return to Silent Hill (original director Christophe Gans returns as well), The Conjuring: Last Rites (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprise their Warren roles).

A quick personal anecdote on this one: I started this movie late one night, and very quickly decided I needed to wait and try again in the morning because it was creeping me the hell out. That is to say, I very much enjoyed it.

Previously scheduled for August 2, M. Night Shyamalan's Trap was moved to an August 9 release date. It has since moved again, one week earlier. Trap will now be in theaters August 2. Probably. Most likely.

It's no secret we are big fans of the Adams family (Hellbender) around these parts! We are very excited to have new goodies from one of our favorite filmmaking outfits coming down the pipeline later this year. Their latest endeavor is a creature feature, making its way to the 2024 Fantasia Film Festival this summer.

In the Adams Family's celebration of the classic creature-feature, an American-led fracking crew working deep in the Serbian wilderness find themselves at odds with government assigned environmental advisors. When they get approval to drill, the workers uncover the unimaginable: a dormant parasitic monster entombed deep in the frozen rock. Now awakened, it tears through the mining facility in search of the perfect host.

Alexandre Aja's new horror film has a fall release date, and we are pretty excited about it. Starring Halle Berry as a mother of twin sons trying to outrun and outlast the evil that lurks all around them. Here's the official synopsis:

Nicolas Cage comes back to save the day - and his children - from ferocious creatures at their remote (of course) farmhouse. Arcadian recently had its world premiere at SXSW and will be hitting theaters in April.

Skarsgrd stars as "Boy" who vows revenge after his family is murdered by Hilda Van Der Koy (Janssen), the deranged matriarch of a corrupt post-apocalyptic dynasty that left the boy orphaned, deaf and voiceless. Driven by his inner voice, one which he co-opted from his favorite childhood video game, Boy trains with a mysterious shaman (Ruhian) to become an instrument of death and is set loose on the eve of the annual culling of dissidents. Bedlam ensues as Boy commits bloody martial arts mayhem, inciting a wrath of carnage and blood-letting. As he tries to get his bearings in this delirious realm, Boy soon falls in with a desperate resistance group, all the while bickering with the apparent ghost of his rebellious little sister.

Starring Bill Skarsgrd, Jessica Rothe, Michelle Dockery, Brett Gelman,

Isaiah Mustafa, Yayan Ruhian, with Andrew Koji, Sharlto Copley and Famke Janssen, with the voice of "Boy" Narrated by H. Jon Benjamin. Check out our interview with BoyKills World director Moritz Mohr.

It's a slasher ride along! Tag along with the rotting corpse of Johnny as he stalks his way through the woods. Take a look at the official synopsis and trailer below. In A Violent Nature is coming to theaters May 31.

Ryan (Nick Stahl) is a talented, down-on-his-luck chef with crushing gambling problems. Circumstances being what they are, he leaves town in a hurry for the safe haven of an unnamed Latin American country where his friend Jack (Brian Groh), a more prestigious chef with his own unique troubles, welcomes him into his home.

Directed by Thea Hvistendahl and written by John Ajvide in collaboration with Thea Hvistendahl. Handling The Undead is exclusively at the IFC Center in New York on May 31, expanding in Select Cities on June 7.

Russell Crowe is doing some more exorcisms, and we have the trailer to prove it. Produced by Scream's Kevin Williamson, Crowe stars as an actor shooting a supernatural horror movie. Here's the synopsis:

Academy Award-winner Russell Crowe stars as Anthony Miller, a troubled actor who begins to unravel while shooting a supernatural horror film. His estranged daughter, Lee (Ryan Simpkins), wonders if he's slipping back into his past addictions or if there's something more sinister at play. The film also stars Sam Worthington, Chloe Bailey, Adam Goldberg and David Hyde Pierce.

Written and directed by Joshua John Miller, who also wrote the modern horror classic The Final Girls, and starred as the obnoxious younger brother in Teen Witch and as Homer in Near Dark. The Exorcism is in theaters June 21st.

This German horror film takes place in 1750 Austria and centers on a deeply religious woman named Agnes who has just married her beloved. Her mind and heart soon grow heavy as her life becomes a long list of chores and expectations.

In 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx finally gets her big break. But as a mysterious killer stalks the starlets of Hollywood, a trail of blood threatens to reveal her sinister past.

Her journey from sneaking childhood peeks at FANGORIA to running the HorrorGirl Problems website and podcast came full circle when she joined the Fango family full-time in 2021. A true nightmare come true. She can also be seen in the Queer For Fear and Into The Darkness: Part III documentary series on Shudder.

You can't have a list of the best mystery movies of all time without Agatha Christie. This adaptation of her most well-known novel stars Kenneth Branagh as the famed detective Hercule Poirot, with fun supporting roles for Penelope Cruz, Michelle Pfeiffer, and more A-listers.

If a murder mystery is inspired by Agatha Christie, it simply must be on this list. Those are the rules. See How They Run is set in 1950s London, where the writer's play The Mousetrap is celebrating its 100th performance and on the verge of a big Hollywood adaptation. But when the film's director is found killed under strange circumstances, it's up to a jaded inspector (Sam Rockwell) and an earnest new recruit (Saoirse Ronan) to solve the crime.

Storm Reid leads this clever anthology sequel to Searching (which you'll find further down this list) as a teenager who employs some serious online sleuthing skills after her mother disappears while on vacation with a new boyfriend.

Christine Lucas (Nicole Kidman) is unable to remember her life due to amnesia brought on by a violent attack. Because of this, she wakes up every morning with no memories and has to remeet everyone she knows, including her husband. Before long she finds herself questioning everything about her past.

You know those movies that leave you questioning everything you watched long after the credits roll? Well, this is one. Amy Adams stars in this sci-fi thriller that received eight Academy Award nominations, including best picture, about humans trying to communicate with extraterrestrial visitors.

When two girls go missing while on a walk, one of the fathers, Keller Dover (Hugh Jackman), becomes insistent that the owner of an RV parked on his street is responsible for the kidnappings. But when Detective Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal) finds no evidence linking the driver to the crime, Dover decides to take on the case himself.

Written, produced, and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, Unbreakable follows security guard David Dunn (Bruce Willis), who survives a train crash with no injuries. Soon after, he meets comic book store owner Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson), who proposes an interesting theory: What if superheroes really do exist?

Sidney Poitier stars as Virgil Tibbs, a detective from Philadelphia who becomes involved in a Mississippi murder investigation in this critically acclaimed film. It won five Academy Awards, including best picture. In fact, the film is so culturally significant that the United States National Film Registry has preserved it in the Library of Congress.

The premise of Rear Window is as enticing as it is scary. (Would you expect anything less from an Alfred Hitchcock film?) The story follows a photographer confined to a wheelchair who believes he witnessed a murder. So he spies on his neighbors in nearby apartments as he grows more and more convinced that a crime took place.

Set in 1890 London, this remake of the classic Sherlock Holmes character kicks off with the detective (Robert Downing Jr.) and his partner, Dr. John Watson (Jude Law), preventing the murder of a woman by villain Lord Henry Blackwood (Mark Strong). Despite their success, though, they realize Blackwood has an even bigger plot they must work to stop.
