I would like to initiate a discussion about the posibility of having
marks placed 20 ft from the top and bottom marks to aid the overlap
calls

As i would see it you will need 2 marker buoys one as if starting upwind of
the mark and the other for a down wind start,i think the alternative is the
system used on Sat an observer to make the call, less obstructions in the
water.Any small marker or buoy will be vulnerable to damage by the water
polo guys.perhaps im not the one to say this ..but if in doubt do not go
there.(!@#$#@!0

Bob wether going up wind or down wind we approach the marks in
question from the same direction either on the wind or running so one
marker for each of the 2 marks in question would suffice. As to wether
they would be disturbed is a mute point I feel they would be no more
suseptible to interferance than any others especially during winter
and hopefully by summer we would be able to obsurve the rule without
the need to have on the water reminders.Rob

We have tried this before and all it did was create bedlam approaching
these marks especially when you have several boats vieing for
positions, i tend to agree with Bob Observers are the answer in fact
iwould go even further and say no contest should be run without them.
I believe what was put in place last weekend worked extremely well.

Rob, its all very well saying we only need 2 marks in total, the Marblehead
guys quite often sail the course in reverse, not unless of course these new
markers are to be in place only for Nautic sailing ?The Observer is the
answer last Sat was the quitest it has been for a good while. If all we want
is to have some where to shout, stay at home and do it in comfort!
Did i get this wrong i thought we were to have handicap racing .

bob i was only thinking about the nautic fleet .The other idea that
has been put forward is to put marks on the bank as a reminder either
for the skippers or the observers.I agree the observer system last
weekend worked well in most cases and am happy for this system to
continue. But lets not forget 20 feet on the water is difficult to
judge especially in the glare so if we have a mark either on the
water or on the far bank as a referance point it will make it eiser
for everyone.Allso lets not forget we are trying to encourage more
boats on the water so anything we do to make the racing fairer is good
for the class
