I was having a poke around my boat the other day . Somebody , (who
will remain nameless) dropped the boat at the pond the other day.
Normally this would not have hurt anything but it landed back on the
rudder. Of course the rudder took a different direct from the rest of
the boat and hence , not to put too finer edge on it, bent the rudder.

I slipped the bent rudder out and straighten it and tidied it up and
was about to put it back on when I noriced a fairly large hole in the
boat at the bustle part of where the rudder hangs.

Now the hole is as big as head of a match stick and it is not through
the hull but just into it. as well, I also noticed a very small hole
in the starboard wing. I filled these with Epoxy glue. Now I figured
these were just" wear and tear". The reason I'm mentioning them is
because you can have a LITTLE close look at your hull from time to
time. I can't explain the hole in the rudder section but it was not
caused by the drop. So I will be keeping my eyes open for the real
cause.

Yeah right Jim. Is that TERM ---Ites? Have you noticed (like me) that
the keel paint needs touching up on a fairly regular basis. I don't
mind doing this but I was wondering why this is happening?

I remembered from your visit to Sydney for the Trans Tasman regatta
(you Won) where you were saying that the tuning was all in the LOWER
STAYS. What did you mean and could you expand on it please. Steve

Ive found no holes in my rudder section and the paint on my keel is as
good as when it first came out of the paint shop. Perhaps someone has
been taking core samples from your boat while your back was turned, as
for any more tuning tips my lips are sealed. Cheers.

Following your alert i have examined the stern section of my nautic 12 and
on close inspection i have found a hole.I COULD NOT SEE THE FULL EXTENT OF
THE HOLE AS THE HOLE WAS PARTLY FILLED WITH a piece of stainless rod about
4mm thick,i decided to remove this stainless rod to fully check out this
hole.On removing the stainless rod i found the hole extended all the way
through the hull.I believe this section is called the rudder shaft.

Thank guys for helping me out there . Neville supplied the answers we
needed.

I looked at the Wattle Farm site and it looks great. I have spoken to
some of our fellas and three of them said they were interested in
going over for the Nautic 12 TRANS TASMAN Event in April 2009. Do you
think you could set up a a page to keep us informed on the
developements of this regatta when the info comes to hand , please?
