We have configured OpenDNS with the filter, and I have shown Salodina and Lavina how to administer it from the Yaren school PC connection.
However, it is not a perfect solution. It blocks all adult and “criminal” websites, but I tested and found the following loopholes:
(a) It does not block Google Image search. This is a real problem as almost any keyword these days will turn up something bad. Just a typo or language word might mean something horrendous in other languages, etc. I am asking the technical forum about how to force the laptops to do a Google “Safe search”
(b) One can easily change DNS servers in the wireless network connection settings on a Windows laptop back to Rontel’s and then bypass OpenDNS. This only affects “standard” computers because it is very unlikely that people will work out how to change the linux settings on the laptop and server.
The only real satisfactory solution is to get all the traffic through your content keeper.
Meanwhile, teachers will have to be very careful when allowing students to do Google searches.
