Subject: SPIRITUAL GROWTH
What are the stages of spiritual growth?
1.) Intellectual/Verbal Knowledge
Generally our spiritual practice begins with someone giving us
information on what to do or we read a book telling us what to do.
For example, based on the information provided in this website
you may get an intellectual understanding on how to proceed
with your spiritual practice.
2.) Belief
After we have read or been told about the various concepts of
Spirituality, we begin to develop a certain belief based on what we
have understood. This in turn gives us a sense of purpose on
what needs to be done.
3.) Spiritual Practice
After we intellectually understand the reasons as to why we should do
spiritual practice, the next step is to put into practice the knowledge
that we have gained.
4.) Spiritual Experience
Spiritual practice gives spiritual experiences that lead to an increase in
faith. Increase in faith leads to more spiritual practice.
5.) Faith
Spiritual experiences help strengthen our faith. Faith gives us courage
of conviction that we are on the right path. As a result, we invest
more time in spiritual practice and get higher level of spiritual experiences
which in turn lead to more faith.
6.) Spiritual Emotion
As our faith becomes very strong, we then begin to experience
spiritual emotion, which is having an intense awareness of the presence of God
in everything around us in each and every aspect of our day-to-day activities.
7.) Devotion
When our spiritual emotion becomes pervasive, we come to a stage of
devotion. This devotion ends our feeling of being separate from God.
8.) Self-realisation
This is the ultimate in spiritual growth where we finally merge
into God. At first, since God is viewed as separate from ourself,
we are in a state of duality (dvait). Later, once the goal of Self-realisation is reached,
we go beyond spiritual emotion as we attain a state of non-duality (advait).
