I'm going to play the bad cop regarding USAU membership money.
For those not at Sectionals last Saturday, after we finished playing, the TD informed us that we owed additional money for players who only signed a one-tourney waiver paid a $10 one-tourney fee. All players at Sectionals must be full USAU members, and cannot have one-time waiver fees. To recitfy the situation, those 4 players paid an additional $40 or so to cover their dues. The numbers may be a little off, but that is the general background.
Granted, on the USAU website there are A LOT of guidelines surrounding Sectionals/Regionals/Nationals, however it does clearly state the guidelines for player eligibility.
Under
General Player Info it says:
"2) All players listed on the roster must be current USAU members in good
standing. Players who are not current members must sign up for
membership on the team roster, sign and return the individual waiver
form, and submit the appropriate dues prior to Sectionals. Non-members
who do not register by Sectionals will be crossed off the roster and
will be ineligible to play in the remainder of the Series until they
submit the appropriate forms and fees. The ramifications for having a
non-member participate in the Series with a team are outlined in the,
"Violations and Sanctions" section of these guidelines."
I think it was unfair for those 4 players to have to pay an additional $40, after they were led to believe they only needed to pay $10. But is it fair for the rest of the team (who paid the full membership dues) to cover that difference? Does the burden fall on the captains who organized Sectionals?
I don't know the correct answer, but I can't make it on Sunday, so I wanted all the right info out there.
My personal vote: We all make mistakes, so I'm willing to chip in a few extra dollars to cover the difference. But I think the blame falls on the captains who organized the weekend, not USAU. Tab (and Greg?), you're awesome, no offense. That's just the way I see it.
Apologies for the long email.
Matt
