We have money.
8 players are confirmed (6 men, 2 women)
2 additional women are probables (new to NP)
Are you ready for me to commit you all to playing with these numbers?

also, *still* need money to pay people back for Sectionals. As a team,
we're still out $40 (Pat and I both put in $20, which will go to Emily
first. Still need $40 for John).

I'm in. With an asterisk: I'm also sick and trying to get well for next weekend. It's flu, dammit, and I can't wish it away. I'm doing everything you can do to beat this. But it's possible I won't be able to play. (I hope to be well by Wednesday to play in the first round of the Fall League tourney. If that works out, then the problem is solved.)

Even if I'm still sick, I will be there and can offer my house so long as people who stay with me are willing to clean up after themselves. (My wife is planning to come down for the weekend, too.)

An option for adding to our numbers is, if we all agree we'd like X more men or women, is to delegate 1 or 2 of us to recruit that many, preferably from team members who could not commit earlier, or from players we know from Carrboro pickup.

I recommend we do that, that we try and add two more guys and one more gal, and that, if he is willing, we delegate Greg to do the recruiting.

The reason I think we need 2 more guys and maybe one more gal assuming the two maybes are coming is that with 10 players on the roster, all it takes is a flat tire or a sudden illness and we could be playing savage. If we get our numbers up to 12-13, we are better covered.

This is not a UPA event, we don't have to register our lineup ahead. As a last resort, we can ask the organizers to let us pick up players from Beaufort's enormous team. I play with them several times a year: they are good people, mostly easy going. But they aren't Pineys.

Seems to me the numbers are a little light. I don't know what the rest of you are thinking but maybe this is not our year for this. Besides it also looks like we are short on the money.

Not to be a buzzkill or anything.

I think I'm with Bill on this one.

Maybe I shouldn't speak up, since I'll be moving away soon.  But I feel that NP has to be able to commit a full team to any tournament or not go as a team.  Not only does it look bad, but it doesn't do much to advance NP as a team, it just allows some of us to go to a tourney.

I think that team leaders should sit down over the winter and put together a list of tournies to go to for the year.  People should put them on their calanders and commit to them as a team.  Of course things will come up and sometimes people won't be able to go, and certainly Ultimate organizers are bad about getting firm dates set down, but tournies should be treated as commitments from early on, just like any other commitment would be treated.

If people want to be put on a list of people that are allowable pick-ups for any given tourney, that's not a problem to me, as long as they know they'll be booted off, or not receive much playing time, as the people who commit early on.  Relying on pick-ups we've never met, or not being able to got o a full tourney, is not only somewhat embarrassing for a USA Ultimate registered team, but it's not going to make anyone join the team as a committed player.

Again, I say this as a member of the team who unfortauntely would have to join that list of people who can't commit to practice, but Beaufort was going to be my last tournament as a full-time NPer, and I'm not happy that we cannot even bring anything more than a savage squad.

I do not believe that it is too much to ask for people to commit to 4 or 5 tournaments that only come every two months or so.  Nor do I believe that practice is too much to commit to once every other week.  But people need to be committed if the team is going to A) not go 0 for every tournament and B) be able to sustain itself into the future, whatever that future may hold.

Sorry for the rant, but to sum up: I'm for going to Beaufort if we can field a team; I'm not for going if we will need 5 or 6 pickups just to last the weekend.

Pax,
Dan(ger)

I hope we can field a team.  I agree it really should be a team of _us_.

Can we buttonhole other team members and raise our numbers? It's a really fun tourney.

And, since this is going out to our group listserv:

Hey, the rest of you guys, speak up! Come play with us next weekend! Let's go out on a high note in 2011, with a good showing at this tourney as a springboard to a bigger season next year or as a happy ending to two years of playing together.

I'm going to be really disappointed if we don't go. We made a commitment to the tourney organizers to be there. I  don't want to let them or the other teams down. I've been playing there for years, so when Tab asked, I contacted my friends down there in August and assured them we were coming. At that time, we had it seemed like 20 of us say they would be there for sure. Please help me keep my promise!

I'm sorry I'm sick. I'm trying to get well. But I'm not the reason we have such low numbers. Where are all the Naughty Pine players who were gung ho for this 2 months ago?

Speak up! Come on and play!

I am out of shape as hell, and still recovering from a bit of sickness myself, but I am willing to play savage all weekend long.  It is a good time, with good food and a great party at the bar, like Tommy said.  I also have to agree with Dan in that this team needs to be able to get its shit together or we need to fold.  Those be my 2cents.  When do we know what the verdict is oh captain my captain?

Btw, the entry fee is covered (though I'm still out $50) if Greg shows up with his promised cash. But we've only got 6 men and 3 women (maybe 4)
I need a verdict tonight or first thing in the morning, or I'm going to call it for the nays.

Let's get in the NP spirit guys. I would love to play with everyone. To be honest, we wouldn't win if we had a full roster anyway so lets just go give it a honest effort and eat some BBQ and have a pint after we are done.
