Familia Romana (the main book of Pars I of the Lingua Latina per se illustrata series) contains thirty-five chapters and describes the life of a Roman family in the 2nd century A.D. It culminates in readings from classical poets and Donatus's Ars Grammatica, the standard Latin school text for a millennium. Each chapter is divided into two or three lessons (lectiones) of a few pages each followed by a grammar section (Grammatica Latina) and three exercises (Pensa). The collection begins with the adventure of Pygmalion, the Cypriot sculptor who carved a woman out of ivory, and ends with nearly 200 verses of original Latin from books two and three of Ovid's Metamorphoses. Hans Henning Orberg (1920-2010) received his MA in English, French and Latin from the University of Copenhagen in 1946. He taught at various Danish high schools until 1963 and at the Grenaa Gymansium until 1988. From 1953 to 1961 he served on the staff of the Nature Method Institute, Copenhagen. He is the author of the Latin course "Lingua Latina secundum naturae rationem explicata" (1955-56); the course was revised in 1990-91, with a number of supplements, under the title "Lingua Latina per se illustrata". His books were published by Domus Latina, a publishing house he founded in Denmark, and they are distributed in the English speaking world by Focus Publishing.
Assimil, Le Latin sans peine is a fun and great book, constructed with a very different philosophy than Familia Romana. It consists of 101 dialogues in Latin with a parallel translation in French (it is also available in Italian as Assimil Il Latino senza sforzo, and German as Latein ohne Mhe). Some of the dialogues are silly conversations in everyday situations, while others are passages taken from Latin literature, from Plautus to an early modern apothecary oath. Each dialogue also comes with notes on grammar and vocabulary.
Assimil Le Latin Sans Peine is best used in conjunction with a complete foundational course in Latin like Familia Romana. This way, you get a strong foundation from FR while at the same time discover interesting passages from two millennia of Latin literature.
Although the translations and comments are in French, you could still get a lot out of the book by reading and listening to the dialogues. Without the French notes and translations, you should perhaps wait until you have a foundation in Latin.
