This all-new graphic novel based on Nickelodeon's animated series Danny Phantom takes readers on a time traveling adventure that takes place directly after the series finale with the original ghost gang: Danny Fenton and his best friends Sam Manson and Tucker Foley! When the gang starts experiencing time travel glitches, Danny's archnemesis Vlad Masters arrives on his doorstep with terrifying news: Dark Danny has escaped from his prison!
Danny must then get his friends together and partner with Vlad to jump through time and space and unlock secrets of the Ghost Zone! But can they make it back to Amity Park before Dark Danny destroys the ghost gang's entire world?[1]
The story takes place after the apocalyptic Disasteroid, Danny Phantom is no longer living in secret and is famed for his heroic deeds; Amity Park reversed into a common patrol town for ghost hunters and teenagers. Danny's ghost powers are somewhat diminishing.
His best friend/girlfriend Sam, and short-term mayor Tucker experience a strange time distortion when appearing in the Middle Ages and facing Princess Dora's Dragon Form before suddenly transporting back to the present. After attending a city's convention, they experience another time skip and decide to investigate, when Vlad Plasmius appears and explains the situation: after surviving the Disasteroid, Vlad realized he had nowhere to return on Earth and desperately tried asking Clockwork's help; in the disputation, Vlad accidentally released Danny's evil self from the Fenton Thermos.
Dark Danny then breaks Clockwork's staff and brutally forced him into a merge transformation resulting in a twisted time & space continuum that would emit a high implosion in the Ghost Zone, thus destroying it [and the Earth] if not resolved soon. Powerless Danny and allies reluctantly join Vlad when he claims to have clues on the Ghost Zone's Ecto-Energy source. The Infi-map however cannot relocate to something beyond ancient, so they have to search manually within the oldest place in the Ghost Zone - Pariah Dark's tomb. After evading more reality trips and the Fright Knight, Vlad and the teenagers unravel 'the Seven' ancient relics that indicate ghosts are manifestation of human emotions, proving Jazz's theory.
Danny realized his declining powers are due to losing his purpose after the Earth became "ghost proof", also Vlad felt ashamed that his thirst for power only drove his desired loved ones away. Meanwhile, the Fentons and Valerie tried protecting Amity Park from Dark Danny's wrath is now on the verge of destruction. A fully-restored Danny Phantom and reformed Vlad teamed to stop Dark Danny in an overwhelming defeat. Clockwork is freed from the fusion. Danny refuses to trap Dark Danny in the Thermos as he's now dissolving from the timestream. Vlad takes responsibility and lets Dark Danny inhabit his body as atonement.
To fix the disrupted timestreams, Clockwork can open two doors that will lead Danny and gang into stable realities using the time medallions they wear; but with a cost. Door One goes to where Danny won't have his powers, and Door Two is where he is erased from the Disasteroid event. They choose the latter. In the new timeline, Danny's fame is gone and his ghost half is a secret again, including Vlad's. Vlad is at his mansion where Dark Danny is converted into one of his experimental clones and becomes his surrogate son. Despite these changes, Danny believes there will be other good probabilities for him in the future. He, Sam, Tucker, and Jazz go to eat at the Nasty Burger until they deal with the Box Ghost. At the very end, Valerie is shown to have survived the time merger because she still has her time medallion, meaning she still remembers both Danny and Vlad's alter egos.
OK I read it. I generally enjoyed it. Comic managed to capture the style and humor of the show. Artwork was good. Very rubbery which contrasted with very on-model look of the show so it took a bit to adjust. It worked for comedic moment and I was worried it wont work in serious moments but action also looked good. All shows aesthetics with how ghosts, force fields, lasers, weapons, etc looked were very much on point.
I do feel like titular glitches don't really add much to the story. With Dark Danny on the loose, they don't feel like important threat and frankly they waste time. Wild West one ate like 10 pages. Overall they seem to exist only for the sake of reboot at the end.
So my big problem is... What is the current media obsession with redemption stories?? Why are they everywhere? I'm glad we all like Avatar but it's no reason to keep trying to do Zuko! Dark Danny I just don't get. He doesn't feel like he should be possible to redeem. Everything at the end with him just sounds wrong, especially him going "I always lose". I'm not against Vlad being redeemed but it was oddly handled. It seems like most of it was him having an epiphany while watching Danny declare himself being bridge between worlds. Overall until the fight with DD, Vlad isn't his cool scheming smug self. I don't mind him being played as the butt of the joke but all he does it goofy frenemy for entire comic until redemption. And then there is this entire deal with Source and Danny declaring his new purpose. Again, I'm not against idea that ghosts should be treated less as enemies, that part is strongly supported by the show (rampant ghost racist, friendly ghosts, antagonists with complex motivations, numerous team-ups) but I dont fully grasp what is the specific plan here. Is Danny supposed to act as their therapist? It's said that ghost lose their purpose with time but it doesnt seem like most of Danny's enemies are in danger of that. It would work better if they managed to work in Danny helping one ghost into the book (I dont count Vlad and DD.)
Also I have question tropes page for the book. It seems to be under impression that entire Season 3 never happened but it looks like the only change actually is that Danny's identity is a secret again. The mayor specifically makes a speech in which he references Vlad no longer being mayor and Disasteroid, just mentioning that they have no idea how they survived.Edited by Sunchet on Jul 22nd 2023 at 2:59:09 PM
Also I have question tropes page for the book.Yeah, I think the fact that everyone's vague memories of the Disasteroid event caused them to go back to hating Danny Phantom confused whoever wrote those entries. As for, Dan Phantom's redemption, I thought it was fine. Once you hit Danny's big realization moment about what he wants to use his powers for, it makes sense that Dan Phantom would be the first person he'd approach with that new mindset.Edited by RacattackForce on Jul 22nd 2023 at 9:20:50 AM
Secondary role. They appear throughout the book but nothing super important. Jack and Maddie get easily the smallest role mostly as combat support and some comic relief. They have one brief gag interaction with Vlad. When he lands near them during fight, Jack greets him cheerfully and Maddie reminds him that they hate him now.
Honestly, the comic plays straight into the thing I hate the most about the phandom with the whole Vlad thing (Dan as well, but the former irriates me more than the later), so I can't say I'm excited about it (and I already had problems with the art in the previews).
In my interpretation the ghost dimension is an in-between world with its own inhabitants; human souls pass through it en route to the afterlife. If they become trapped there for whatver reason a ghost manifests. If the soul spends enough time anchored to the dimension, the entities formed become permanent parts of it.Edited by MrSeyker on Jul 22nd 2023 at 9:43:33 AM
I think the redemption thing works. Because it's not just Vlad going "well, being evil sucks, I want to be good now", it's "holy fuck, my evil plan nearly destroyed the whole planet, everyone hates me now and the kid I kept telling wouldn't amount to anything without me is the saviour of both the Earth and the Ghost Zone."
He's still in character, but he's mostly acting like he does when he knows he's overpowered and his plan failed completely. The book doesn't even really go "he's totally redeemed!" It's just like "well, he said he wants to try and do better, but is he really capable of that?" It also refuses to explain if Dark Danny is really redeemed or not.
Honestly, this book is basically like a special. I'm seeing some reactions to it where people don't really seem to like that it's really not that wide in focus, but I don't think it was supposed to be? It's clearly intended to set up a new status quo for any future stories that might happen and if there's a continuation, it'll probably focus more on something else. And it's apparently selling pretty well, so there might be a continuation?
Also, straight up, this art style is an improvement on the show. Staying totally on model, especially to Hartman's style, kinda works for comedy, but it makes for some janky-ass fight scenes, especially since the show was apparently relatively low-budget. Going with more dynamic art makes it look more modern and gives it a level of dynamicism that wasn't present originally.Edited by Zendervai on Jul 23rd 2023 at 10:14:39 AM
