TheEssential Card pack bringing back Shadespire, Nightvault and Beastgrave universal cards that are immune to rotation has had an effect too. While it may not seem like having a big shakeup, the Essential Card Pack has shifted some warbands around but also allowed others to cement their positions, for better or for worse.

Note that Rotation is no longer a factor now due to influx of more Direchasm cards. While the effects of rotation are still felt by certain warbands, the addition of new cards has now softened this blow.

This is my current tier list for Q2 2021 of Warhammer Underworlds. Before explaining what each placement means, there will also be a new key system noting if a warband has gone up a tier, down a tier or remained in the same position plus if they are a new placement. These symbols are:

[=] Dread Pageant: Dread Pageant remain static with the power of Slaanesh letting them hold their ground against other aggro warbands. Fast, consistent damage and amazing damage negation keep them strong. Another +1 damage card (basically) with Gloryseeker and some other Essential Pack Cards keep them versatile and powerful.

[!] Crimson Court: The Crimson Court make their new appearance in B Tier. Now, while this probably shocks a lot of their fans, the warband still suffers due to a reliance on Hunger counters and general rules bloat. They have solid stats and good fighter cards but are let down by having mostly range 1 attacks. Their Hunger control build is probably A Tier but the Crimson Court currently struggle to deal with the higher-placing warbands. Their aggro build is showing more promise but it still pales in comparison to what the better aggro warbands can do in terms of damage and scoring.

[v] Farstriders: The Farstriders drop a tier due to the Storm of Celestus. While having good range 1 output, it just pails in comparison to the Storm of Celestus. The Farstriders just take too long to get going and are set back by weak faction cards.

[^] Eyes of the Nine: The Eyes of the Nine have gone up a tier! Are they still bad? Yes, but the Essential Card Pack has given them a much needed boost to their hold objective playstyle. The Eyes of the Nine still suffer heavily in the current Direchasm meta but are no longer E Tier material.

[=] Godsworn Hunt: Primacy. The Godsworn Hunt give it away (now) too easily while struggling to get going thanks to less than stellar faction objectives. Other warbands do their job but just better. If they had some more reliable faction objectives, then it really would be a different story. By the time they get going now, the game is generally already over.

Depending on how things go, the next instalment of this article will drop early/middle Quarter 3 of 2021, which should be around August time. Direchasm has changed rapidly in a short period of time thanks to the compressed release schedule, making monthly versions of this incredibly difficult to reliably make. By that time of the Q3 update, we would have had the whole Direchasm season to play with and experience. It will be interesting to see how the full season of cards and warbands will shape the last few months of Direchasm.

The Hunger Turtle Control build is sitting at the back of the board and spamming Hunger counters via cards with Lost Pages on Gorath. Really easy and uninteractive. Has to be rushed down early to lose.

Each fighter: Add the following sentence to the Empower spell action on both sides of each fighter card: In addition, if this spell is cast, this fighter cannot take this action again in this phase.

Each fighter other than Blackpowder: Change the Light-fingered reaction to read as follows: Reaction: After a friendly fighter's successful Attack action that targets a fighter adjacent to this fighter, gain one Swag counter. In addition, you can pick one of the target's upgrades and break that card.

Each fighter: Change the Struggle ability to read as follows: After this fighter's activation, you can give this fighter one Spirit counter. At the start of this fighter's activation, you can remove this fighter's Spirit counters.

Grinkrak the Great: Change the Dub reaction (on both Inspired and Uninspired sides of the card) to read as follows: Reaction: Use this after you score a non-Quest objective or after an activation step in which this fighter made one or more actions and is holding an objective. Choose one other surviving friendly fighter. Inspire the chosen fighter.

Skritter: Change the Worthless ability (on both Inspired and Uninspired sides of the card) to read as follows: This fighter cannot be dealt damage by gambits. If this fighter would be taken out of action, remove it from the battlefield and clear all counters and persisting effects from this fighter; it is not taken out of action.

A: When an Attack action has Cleave, the target cannot count Block symbols as successes in their defence roll. This means that Ammis and Rastus, once Inspired can use Dodge and Critical success symbols (and any relevant support symbols) but not Block symbols as successes when they are the target of an Attack action with Cleave.

A: In the Inspire step after the spell has been resolved.

In the case of a spell that remains in effect until a particular event, such as Sphere of Ghur, that spell is not considered to be resolved until after that event, and the fighter will not be Inspired until the Inspire step that follows that point.

In the case of the Empower spell action, and spells that persist, such as Eldritch Haze, these spells are considered to be resolved once they have been cast, meaning that the fighter is Inspired in the first Inspire step after they cast the spell.

Q: Can the Blue Horror ever be taken out of action? Can a player gain a glory point for taking the Blue Horror out of action? Can objectives connected with taking fighters out of action be scored by taking the Blue Horror out of action?

A: The Blue Horror miniature is replaced with the Brimstone Horrors miniature in the hex in which the Blue Horror would have been taken out of action. Clear all tokens from the fighter. If the fighter has not yet moved a number of hexes equal to their Move characteristic, they can continue that Move action. If the fighter was making a Charge action, they finish resolving that Charge action. In either case, the fighter gains one Move or Charge token as normal.

A: This allows players to use an ability that removes wound tokens from a fighter to Inspire a fighter from Ylthari's Guardians even if that fighter has no wound tokens on their fighter card. For example, Healing Pulse or Healing Amphora can both be used to Inspire fighters from that warband even if the affected fighter has no wound tokens on their fighter card. Note that cards like Lifesurge only affect fighters that have wound tokens on their fighter cards, so these cards will not Inspire Ylthari's Guardians unless they have wound tokens on their fighter cards.

Q: When using Ghoul Call, if the game boards are set up diagonally the line drawn from the Scatter token can leave and re-enter the battlefield. When this happens, which hex do I place the Crypt Ghoul in?

Q: When using Ghoul Call, can the Scatter token be in the furthest empty hex from the Scatter token (e.g. if I place it in an edge hex)? In other words, can I place a Crypt Ghoul in the same hex as the Scatter token?

Q: Do I gain the Primacy token if a friendly Dakko Sharp-stikka makes a Charge superaction onto an objective in enemy territory if there is an enemy fighter within 2 hexes of him after the Move action but not after the Attack action?

Q: If a friendly Madmob fighter takes an enemy leader out of action with an Attack action during an activation can they claim the Primacy token twice in a row - once for taking an enemy leader out of action and once for their Primal surge reaction, and therefore score Swelling Pride as a result?

Q: If my opponent plays a card that gives me the option to discard cards to prevent an effect, such as Forgotten Nightmares, Fury of the Storm, Lurelight, or Crushing Pressure, what happens if I cannot discard the required cards?

Q: If Retaria makes an Attack action with Stagger, and the damage from that Attack action takes the target out of action, does that Attack action still stagger the target, and can she therefore Inspire?

Q: When Ephilim makes the Fires of Change Attack action, if there are friendly fighters adjacent to the target that have no wound counters, am I obliged to deal damage to those fighters if I use the reaction on the Fires of Change Attack action?

Q: When the line drawn for the Hammertide ability enters a hex occupied by an enemy fighter, can the player whose turn it is decide the order in which the enemy fighter is dealt damage and/or staggered?

Looncourt, Scrag Em! for example is great for Snorbo da Spore who will be sitting back most of the time although it could be given to Moonface Nagz or Pointy Burk if you want to be aggressive with your fighters it all depends on the enemy warband which I like because it makes it very important who you give the quests to and at what point in the game although the nice thing is that if your fighter gets killed the objective card gets sent back to your hand for you play in the next power step.

I really like the ploy cards as they give your fighters with quests that extra buff they need to complete those quests, Bold Pile On, Gittish Ferocity and Stab, stab and stab again all add that extra buff if used at the right time to complete certain quests so I really like the synergy with the gambits and objectives for this warband.

Games Workshop also sent us the Fearsome Fortress rivals deck as well to review. Grinkraks Looncourt overall looks like a super solid addition to Warhammer Underworlds with phenomenal looking models and a fantastic rivals deck I really do look forward to playing this war band in the future.
