Thyagaraja Festival - Inclusion of dance

Dear Dancers,

    

We are reaching out to you to get a sense of what the dance community here feels about being part of the following endeavour.

 

There is a Thyagaraja Aradhana Music Festival hosted each year by ACME. For the festival in 2017 to be held in the 3rd week of April, they approached us (Joyce and Meera) about adding dance to the whole festival. There are several ways of making this happen as long as the dancers perform pieces in keeping with the theme of the festival – namely Thyagaraja’s work.

 

Some options are:

 

1. : Solo or Group with Live Orchestra - Register as a dance company/soloist, and work with local musicians and dancers to create your own work for the Thyagaraja pieces you intend to perform.

 

2. : Solo or Group with Pre-Recorded Music - Register as a dance company/soloist and use your own pre-recorded (for dance) Thyagaraja songs.

 

Please Reply All to this mail and let us know if you are interested in participating and what option you might pick (1 or 2). We would appreciate hearing from you latest by Nov 15th, 2016.

Thank you for sharing this information with the group. I think it would be great to have performances by local dancers/groups as part of the Thyagaraja Aradhana. I have a few questions for you.

1. What is the duration allocation for each group?

2. What is the duration allocated for each solo?

3. When in April (Exact date) is the show and what is the venue for the dance performance ?

4. Could a person who is performing as part of a group also perform a solo segment?

Thanks much everyone for your interest! This initial mail was only to gauge the interest level in the dance community here to perform with Thyagaraja's compositions as the music to dance to. We were not sure if people would be willing to work with the constraint on the music for the dance, but it is wonderful to see all your enthusiasm for it :).

As of now, the tentative date for the dance festival is April 16th, 2017 at Bellevue High School. However, the day being Easter Sunday, it might move to the following weekend.

Decisions about time allocation for performances etc. will be discussed after Nov 15th - the date we requested everyone to respond by. Not everyone has hit Reply All on their response. So based on the responses that came to my Inbox, here are the folks who have responded so far:

Anu Samrat -  group (dance school)

Prashanthi - ?

Anusha Ravishankar (solo and/or group)

Subhashini Vijay Santhanam - group (dance school)

Vidyalakshmi Vinod - group (dance school)

Vidya Balasubramaniam - ?

Joyce, did anyone respond only to you besides Prashanthi?

Since we gave everyone time till Nov 15th to respond, we will wait until then to work on the logistics piece and answer the specific questions some of you have asked. At the simplest level, as in all other festivals, each dance school/group will get a chunk of time to perform. Until we hear from everyone who is interested though, we won't be able to give you a commitment for the length of your performance. Also, as with the music festival, it will be nice for as many dancers as possible to participate. So, considerations about an artist performing both solo and in a group will need to be discussed after we hear from everyone.

Srishti dance ensemble(Sangeetha, Preetha, Vidyalakshmi , Sunitha and myself) would like to perform - option #2 - pre-recorded music. 

I would be interested in the solo (option #2 - pre-recorded music) but will be able to confirm this only at a later time.

Great idea! Haven't danced or been a part of any dance/music event in
a long time. I am really in awe seeing all of you continuing to remain
active in the classical dance scene. Keep it up! Yearning to get

I am happy to see this idea of including dancers in Thyagaraja Aradhana festival happening. I used to think about it specially when I started learning Thyagaraja kritis.

I will go with the second option of dancing with recorded music with my senior students.

I had worked on the song Brovabaramma, so we will like to present that.

By the way, congratulations to Srishti Dance Ensemble group. I was happy to see your photo in Seattle Times, it is great!

Hi Joyce, How are you doing? I've been thinking to talk to you and felt happy to see this email.

Hello Meera, Though we haven't met yet, I've heard a lot about you from Ashok and Joyce. Glad we could connect this way.

A big Thank you to both of you for putting this together and reaching out to all of us. It is great to see the so much enthusiasm from the dancers/dance schools to perform in the Thyagaraja Aradhana festival and it motivates me and I'd love to be a part of it as well. So I, along with a bunch of other Kuchipudi dancers, have got together and we'd like to present a Thyagaraja Krithi for the festival. We are a group of four (Me, Lakshmi, Pushkara, Nayab) and would like to go with Option 2(dance with recorded music). Also, we'd like to know few more details(I know most of the people have already asked you all these questions but I expect answers only after everything gets finalized) please let us know

1. The allowed duration of each piece?
2. Can a song be performed more than once in the festival? (as we are thinking of one of the Pancharatna keerthanas and I am not sure if anyone else wanna choose from the same)
3. Will the festival be only for a day or stretched for the whole weekend?

With all the excitement, looking forward for the festival.

Hello WA-based dancers!

      I hope you've been enjoying the sunshine and beauty of colorful spring flowers in Seattle lately.  

I am writing to all of you to invite you to our theatrical production, "Anaadi Mi, Ananta Mi".

We are working on the production about Great Patriot, freedom fighter Veer Savarkar in collaboration with IPAP. 

IPAP is working on live music and we are working on dances on the very unique poems of Veer Savarkar. 

In this production we will have monologues, live music, dances to live music and recorded music, slides and commentary.

Venue: Sammamish HIgh School Performing Art Center

Date: May 28,2018, (Memorial day weekend, Monday)

Time: 4 to 7 pm
