Priyanka started dancing at the age of eight and had the privilege of learning from Guru Hare Krishna Behera. For the next 12 years she performed extensively, accompanying Guruji and his troupe from Odissi Kendra. After moving to Seattle, Priyanka continued her training in the Odissi Mahari tradition under Dr. Ratna Roy in 2001. Since then, she has performed with Urvasi Dance Ensemble in the Pacific Northwest.
Priyanka believes in order to gain competence in an art form, one must be willing to look beyond the superficial boundaries of various styles. A dancer's pure dance form, expression, and nuance is individualistic. By using formal training and the teacher’s body as a guide (not a template), a dancer can develop and discover new ways of self-expression.
In Priyanka’s words, one of the most satisfying experiences was dancing with Joyce for the Tsunami Benefit in 2004. She got a brief peek into the world of Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam and be part of Joyce's choreographic process in creating a unique piece of work.
