Note that the first beach area you see, from the parking lot, is not
where
you'll find other naturists. The parking lot is not CO. There are
(currently) PortaPotties near the parking lot, but none on the beaches
themselves. Please don't bring glass on the beach.
Mazo Beach is in Mazomanie,WI, which is in the
Southwest part of Wisconsin.
To get to the beach you go down a dirt road, and
park at the main parking lot, and then you have to walk down a long
trail to get to the beach. Some people (mainly the handicapped) have
keys to the gate that they got from the DNR (Department of Natural
Resources [they own this land.]) so they drive their cars down the
trail, and park in the handicapped parking lot. Other people ride their
bikes. There's usually lots of mosquitoes along the trail, so one must
bring plenty of bug spray with them. But, the bugs are gone once you
get to the beach, so the walk is well worth it.
You get to the end of the trail and go past the
concrete boat landing, and then you can set your gear on the beach and
strip off.
The beach actually changes its shape and size
from time-to-time, being that it's located on the mighty Wisconsin
River.
When you get to Mazo Beach you park in the parking lot, and then you
have to walk down a very long trail to get to the beach. Be sure to
bring bug spray!!! The mosquitos can get pretty nasty, but it's worth
it, because the beach is such a great place. Handicapped people can get
keys to the gate and park further down, they can get these keys from
the DNR. There are 2 porta-potties before you get to the trail, and 2
more closer to the beach. You must be dressed until you get to the
beach, so don't strip off until your on the beach, and put something on
if you go to the porta-potties. They are no garbage cans there, so
bring your trash back with you!
The Beach regulars are pretty vigilant in not tolerating inappropraiate
behavior. This rarely happens, but if it does the regulars will make
the perps leave. It's best to get info on the water levels as the beach
is on The Wisconsin River, and sometimes you have a good beach, and
sometimes you don't. Also, you need to be aware of the river's current
which sometimes can flow rather quickly. Don't venture out past the
middle of the river, as you will then be in a different town and a
different county where nudity is illegal, (The beach and nude part of
the river, sand bars, etc. is in Mazomanie in Dane County, the opposite
side is in Sauk City in Sauk County.) you will also no longer be on
DNR property, but on the propertry of Ruth Bender, who isn't real crazy
about nudists.
The Beach people are pretty friendly, sometimes they'll even bring
treats along for other users! Sometimes you'll see a volleyball net set
up. Past the main beach, past some shrubs and to the left is where the
gay guys are now hanging out.
There was a guy there who builds real elaborate sand castles. "Earl"
was there a few times, he usually stays dressed, I think he's a little
bit mentally off, but he's pretty harmless. He bikes all the way from
Sauk City to get to the beach. Some of the beach regulars try to
befriend him, buying him sodas in town, etc.
The Rev. Ralph Ovedahl, and his cronies (members of Wisconsin
Christians United [if you can call them that!], and some of his
Republican sympatheziers (sp.?) in the Wisconsin Assembly) have been
trying for a few years to get the nude usage at the beach put to a
stop, they have picketed along the trail to the beach, and used other
harrassment and intimidation tactics. Ralph sometimes "preaches" in the
parking lot.
So far Ralph and his band of loony tunes have been batting zilch. The
beach is still quite legal!
Ralph and his cronies usually only pick a few weekends a year in
the summer to do their "preaching", er harrassing! It's best just to
walk past them and try to ignore them. Ralphie has been charged with
harrassment of a beach goer on one occasion (he was calling her a
harlot,jezebel,etc.)
