Nudist Beaches: Southwest England

Nudist beach reports posted to a web site I found:

New Beach : Cornwall: North Coast
Cornwall: North Coast Flexbury, Bude

New Beach : Cornwall: North Coast
Cornwall: North Coast The Strangles, Crackington Haven. The beach is
pebbles and shingle with areas of sand at low tide. With cliffs behind
and shingle below the sun can be quite hot.. After actually getting to
the beach there are two possibilities. During the week a number of
naturists congregate towards the northern end of the beach however on
'busy' weekends the Naturists tend to migrate further north a few
hundred yards onto the beach known as Little Strand. CARE must be
exercised with this option though, as it is possible to get cut off by
a high tide. The main beach tends to be fairly liberal even on a busy
weekend there are a number of females topless. Access is via
unclassified roads leading from the A39(T) with runs roughly North to
South from Stratton/Bude (North) to Newquay (South). It can be
approached from the North leaving the A39 at Wainhouse Corner or the
South leaving the A39 at either Otterham Down or on the B3263

New Beach : Cornwall: North Coast
Cornwall: North Coast Holywell Bay (Penhale Sands), near Perranporth.
The resort of Perranporth is situated on the north Cornwall coast,
south-west of Newquay. It boasts a huge sandy beach backed by the sand
dunes of Penhale Sands. Naturist use of part of the beach is well known
and tolerated. From the westbound A30, the B3285 get you to Perranporth
by way of Goonhavern. Shortly before getting to the town, at the top of
a hill you will see the entrance to Perran Sands Holiday village. At
almost the same point, turn north on to a minor road which leads to the
hamlet of Mount and (by way of a footpath) to 'St.Pirans Oratory'.
About 1/4 mile along this road, park your car and follow footpath to
the Oratory and beyond, over the dunes, to the sea. Alternatively, is
quite possible to walk along the beach from Perranporth until you reach
the nude section - the further end of this two-mile long beach.

New Beach : Cornwall: North Coast
Cornwall: North Coast Porthkidney, Carbis Bay, St. Ives Porthkidney
Sands is a wide area of sand with dunes behind the beach to the west of
the Hayle River Estuary, itself about two miles east of St Ives.
Bathing anywhere near the river estuary is very dangerous as the
currents can be extremely strong, but if you keep between the flags and
swim in the sea it's very safe. Lifeguards are on duty during the
summer months. At low tide, it's a long way to the sea, but there's
bags of room for sunbathing. Dogs are allowed all year. The western end
of Porthkidney, around Hawk's Point can give excellent hollow surf
off-season when everywhere else is too choppy or blown out. The swell
has to be huge, so it's never any good during the summer.

New Beach : Cornwall: North Coast
Cornwall: North Coast The Isles of Scilly. Many small coves on the
Scillies said to be suitable for naturism. For example: Gugh - joined
to St.Agnes island by a sandbar.

New Beach : Cornwall: South Coast
Cornwall: South Coast Pednevounder/Treen, Porthcurno near Lands End
Pednevounder and Treen are two adjacent coves near Porthcurno, on the
farthest southern tip of Cornwall. The small beaches of sand and broken
shells in a rocky setting can get quite crowded but with good
co-existence between naturists and textiles. There is a cliff descent
to the beach that may well be unsuitable for families with small
children. From Penzance, take the B3315 to the village of Treen. Walk
south across the fields to meet the coast path and then down to the
coves below. The cliff descent directly to Pednevounder (the more
westerly of the coves) is very steep and is "not recommended" - access
can be gained from Treen Cove, but take note of the state of the tide
before doing so. Alternatively, you can walk east along the coastal
footpath from Porthcurno.

New Beach : Cornwall: South Coast
Cornwall: South Coast Berepper (Loe Bar), Gunwalloe Cove near Helston
The signs at Porthleven said that swimming is dangerous at low tide,
but the beach near Berepper may be different. Other posts have said
that great caution is required. The beach is large grit/small shingle
backed by moderate cliffs and faces south west. Excellent for
sunbathing but otherwise poor.

New Beach : Cornwall: South Coast
Cornwall: South Coast Rosemullion Head, Mawnan Smith, S.of Falmouth

New Beach : Cornwall: South Coast
Cornwall: South Coast Vault Beach Gorran Haven, Mevagissey. Vault Beach
is located in an area of National Trust-owned land at Dodman Point,
south of St Austell. Naturist use of the far end of the beach has
continued for many years. The beach itself is privately owned. Gorran
Haven is reached via the B3273 south from St Austell. The road passes
Mevagissey and becomes unclassified before reaching the village. From
Gorran Haven drive or walk to Lamledra - up a steep hill with 'No
Through Road' signs and continue west to the National Trust car park
and the Youth Hostel. From here a public footpath runs down to Vault
beach. Once on the beach walk to its south-western end - nearest Dodman
Point.

New Beach : Devon: North Coast
Devon: North Coast Saunton Sands (Braunton Burrows) near Barnstaple.
The beach at Saunton Sands lies 7 miles west of the north Devon town of
Barnstaple and is a splendid expanse of sand backed by an extensive
area of dunes known as Braunton Burrows.Saunton Sands is a three mile
long expanse of sandy beach facing due west and cut off to the south by
the combined estuaries of the rivers Taw and Torridge. Barnstaple may
be reached by road via the A361 from the westbound M5, the A377 from
Exeter,or the A39 from the direction of north Cornwall. Train services
run from main line at Exeter. From the town take the A361 to Braunton
and then left on to the B3231 to reach Saunton where a (paying) car
park is available near the Saunton Sands Hotel. From there, strike out
southwards on foot to reach area used by naturists - may be up to two
miles at high season. A possible alternative route exists, via a minor
road and private toll road south from Braunton village. A short walk
across the burrows from this road leads to the southern tip of Saunton
Sands - adjacent to the Taw Estuary - from where the
naturist-frequented area lies to the north

New Beach : Devon: North Coast
Devon: North Coast Wild Pear Beach, Combe Martin. Wild Pear Naturist
Beach is a delightful little cove on the North Devon coast, near the
seaside holiday village of Combe Martin. About 5 miles east of
Ilfracombe. The beach is very popular with naturists, however there are
no signs to indicate that the beach is naturist. The beach can only be
reached on foot and the nearest car park is in Combe Martin. The
village can be reached via the A399 from Ilfracombe or the A39 / A399
from the direction of Minehead. Walk up through the car park behind the
Foc'sle Inn at the back of Combe Martin beach. At the top of the car
park, follow the signs for the coast path and the Hangman Hills. The
walk to the beach is quite strenuous and we wouldn't recommend it for
anyone elderly or unfit. Also, the path is narrow and, in places,
slippery. Good trainers or proper walking shoes are advisable. The
first part of the walk, up to "Little Hangman" is uphill all the way.
When you reach "Little Hangman", you can rest on one of the seats
provided. Follow the coastal path and you will see the hill called
"Great Hangman" ahead. Follow the coast path and just after you cross a
stile, the path down to the beach is on your left with the path to
"Great Hangman" straight on. The first thing you encounter on the path
down to the beach is a gate bearing a sign which reads "Wild Pear
Beach. No access due to landslip". The beach can still be reached. The
path down to the beach is narrow and winding. The landslip has occurred
in the last ten metres down to the beach itself, but it is still
possible to get down to the beach with care.

New Beach : Devon: South Coast
Devon: South Coast : Bigbury Bay, W. of Bigbury-on-Sea

New Beach : Devon: South Coast
Devon: South Coast East Prawle, S. of Kingsbridge

New Beach : Devon: South Coast
Devon: South Coast Slapton Sands, south of Dartmouth. The beach is a
mix of shingle and tiny red pebbles, backed by red sandstone cliffs -
beware falling rocks! Depending upon the tide, the beach shelves
steeply below the water's edge with a strong undertow when sea
conditions are rough - swim with caution. From Dartmouth take the A379
south. Beyond Stoke Fleming the road offers fantastic views across
Start Bay as it skirts the coast. About 1 mile after passing Strete,
the road descends steeply to sea level at Strete Gate. Here there is a
car park on the left and access to the beach. Once on the beach walk
northeast (left) for about a third of a mile to reach the nude section.

New Beach : Devon: South Coast
Devon: South Coast. Petitor, N. of Oddicombe Beach, Torquay .The beach
is in a cove and consists of a mixture of pebbles and some sand,
scattered with larger rocks. It has a strong local following and they
tend to enforce their "rules" quite fiercly. One such rule governs who
goes where: single men to the left, ladies, couples and families to the
right. Petitor is very close to Torquay, about 2 miles, and could be
reached on foot from there. Alternatively, the B3199 Torquay - Shaldon
road will take you to the St Marychuch area, where you can park in
Petitor Road. Leaving the car, walk to the end of Petitor Road and on
down the long grassy slope. At the end turn left and continue down to
the beach. It's a stiff trek down and back, unsuitable for those with
walking difficulties.

New Beach : Devon: South Coast
Devon: South Coast Budleigh Salterton W. of town beach. This is a
pebble/shingle beach that slopes quite steeply - at high tide swimmers
are out of their depth within a few yards of the water's edge. That
apart, swimming is safe. The cliffs provide some shelter from the wind
when from the North. Given the nature of the town, is is unsurprising
that, at off-peak times, beach users are sometimes predominantly
elderly and male. Budleigh Salterton is reached by the B3178 from
Exmouth or (in the opposite direction) from the A3052 and B3178 from
Sidmouth. When in the town, the largest car park (paying) is just
inland from the Eastern end of the beach.

New Beach : Devon: South Coast
Weston Mouth Beach E. of Sidmouth. This is a pebble/shingle beach that
at high tide shelves quite steeply - swimmers are out of their depth
within a few yards of the water's edge. Those with tender feet may find
the shingle hard to walk on. At lower tides the beach shelves gradually
and some sand may be exposed. The cliffs provide shelter from Northerly
offshore winds but the vegetation at the back of the beach affords
little if any shade. Access is possible on foot from the Coastal
Footpath or from the hamlet of Weston. On the A3052 approx. 2 miles
from Sidford (nr.Sidmouth) turn right (south), signposted 'Branscombe'
and 'Donkey Sanctuary'. Along this lane, take the third turning right
to Weston (1/2 mile). There is a sign offering "£1 per day car
parking" but you could try for (limited ) free parking in the small and
well shaded National Trust car park. This fills up quickly and it only
has space for about twenty cars. And additional parking is available at
the nearby Higher Weston Farm (50 yards east of the NT carpark), in
return for a charitable donation in aid of the schools nature study
centre that is run by the farmer. Please do not park on verges and in
gateways - this causes great inconvenience. From the car park, the
coast is about a mile away, plus a futher 1/4 to 1/2 mile to the
naturist section. Follow the track from the car park stile, gently
downhill until you reach the last field before the cliff top. At that
point turn to the right - down the slope - to where a stile leads to a
short cliff path to the beach. The return is somewhat strenuous and is
unsuitable for pushchairs or very young children on foot. On reaching
the beach, strike out to the west (right). Nude use is often acceptable
from a point about 100 yards beyond the former Coastguard building and
as far as the headland.

New Beach : Dorset
Dorset: Ringstead Bay, E. of Osmington Mills, Weymouth Ringstead Bay is
on the coast of Dorset and takes its name from the village. The beach
is pebbles and pretty quiet with nice views across towards Weymouth.
With cliffs behind and chalk pebbles below the sun can be quite hot..
It's a long walk to the beach so I suggest that you where
trainers. There is LITTLE or NO possibility of being overlooked as there
are several hundred feet of cliff and steep hill behind. Few textiles
venture this far, those that do pay no attention to the naturists. The
naturist area at the eastern end of Ringstead Bay can be reached by two
methods. For both of these take the A353 towards Weymouth from the
roundabout one and a half miles west of Owermoigne on the A352 Wareham
to Dorchester road. After approximately two miles watch for a sign on
the left for Ringstead. The turn is extremely sharp left. Follow this
narrow lane approximately a mile through the edge of Upton, up a hill
to where a rather small wood sign points right to Ringstead or left to
a National Trust Car Park. At this point a decision has to be made. You
can turn right and pay to drive down to the village or drive straight
on to the National Trust car park?. The Naturist area is a good twenty
minute walk east from the entrance to the beach along a stoney beach.
Part of this walk can be negotiated along the lower cliff edge avoiding
some of the increasingly smaller pebbles. Free route From the National
Trust car park there is a sparsely signed path leading down to the more
easterly end of the beach. This results in a much shorter walk on the
pebbles. This route does however require a fairly long uphill walk when
you want to go home.

New Beach : Dorset
Dorset: Durdle Door, W. of Lulworth. The beach is pebbles and pretty
quiet with nice views. With chalk cliffs behind and chalk pebbles
below.it becomes a sun trap and the heat can be intense.Usual naturist
beach requirement to walk some distance I would recommend walking boots
or at least tough shoes. It's very peaceful when you get there, and
absolutely no possibility of being spyed on as the beach is hidden by
several hundred feet of cliff!. Lulworth may be reached from the A352
at Wareham via the B 3070. Alternatively take the B3071 south from
Wool. From West Lulworth an unclassified road runs westward for about a
mile to a caravan and camping site at Newlands Warren. From here a path
leads south-westward to meet the coast path above Durdle Door. A cliff
path gives access to the beach, naturists use the western cove.

New Beach : Dorset
Dorset: Taddiford Gap, Barton on Sea, E. of Bournemouth Taddiford Gap
is east of Bournemouth, midway between Barton on Sea and Milford on
Sea. It can be reached both from Barton and from Milford. The beach is
the usual south coast pebbles with some sand when the tide goes out.
The cliff top walk is far enough from the edge of the crumbling
mudstone to ensure that the beach isn't overlooked. Because the beaches
at Barton and Milford are so long textiles do not need to journey this
far to find space and consequently the naturist section is quite
secluded. From the west (Bournemouth and Christchurch) approach along
the A337 signed for Milford on Sea and turn right for Barton on Sea. At
the seafront turn left and keep going until you reach the cliff top car
park at the end of the no through road. From the north, take exit 1 off
the M27 to Lyndhurst and then the A35 for Christchurch. Before
Christchurch turn left onto the B3058 for New Milton. In New Milton
follow the signs for Barton on Sea. In Barton on Sea turn left at the
seafront and keep going until you reach the cliff top car park at the
end of the no through road. From the Pay and Display car park in Barton
on Sea walk half a mile east along the cliff top path. Go across the
pathway bridge, then head down the gully. At the beach turn left.At
this point you will see a steel barrier. Clamber over the rocks beside
the steel and you're on the beach.

New Beach : Polgaver beach
This used to be an offical naturist beach and although it no longer is,
nudism is widely practiced on the beach. At the back of the beach in
the trees and bushes there are often couples enjoying themselves but
the far end of these trees is the gay area. Highly recomended for a day
of sun and fun!

Update : Where is Polgaver Beach?
We have had many enquiries regarding the location of Polgaver Beach.
Polgaver Beach can be found by following signs for Carlyon Bay in St
Austell. On reaching the beach, park car in main car park and walk Left
facing the sea, going along the beach edge until reaching an old roofed
bar area. The nude/fun area starts here. Have fun and Enjoy but note
that golfers looking down from the cliffs can see this area so make
sure you are not too exposed and there are certainly enough areas for
some privacy!

Update : Downderry beach report summer 2004
Last year I visited Downderry beach. I gained access from the coastal
path and through the trees, it takes about 15 minutes to descend down
to the beach and it is hard work, but a break in the trees revealed a
lovely sunny bay and a naked man walking across the beach, I stripped
off and continued my descent naked. On the beach there were about 20
people, some were lying on the beach itself, others were tucked away in
rocky corners.

Update : slapton sands - devon
just had a lovely time on the beach at slapton sands! lots of activity
for singles, couples and gays ( at the far end ). top tip - get stuck
in quick - the voyeurs outnumber the action by far! so take a windbreak
or it gets like wembley arena!!!!
