I am currently enrolled in the LPL certification course and grappling with how to enlist volunteers during these trying times.  How does one go about presenting Phenology as a science and NN as a "new" idea via Zoom?  I used to be an elementary school teacher so don't have difficulty speaking to a crowd but I am no actor much less comfortable with the "little" screen. Any veteran Leaders out there have any suggestions?  Has anyone recruited new volunteers via Zoom?  Any successful strategies would be appreciated!  Thanks in advance!

Hi Annie
One nice thing about zoom is that you can show your computer screen. NPN has ppt that you can use or adjust to present.  Before covid, I presented to our local master gardener using one of LoriAnne’s presentations.  I think hers was a longer presentation timeframe so I cut hers down to fit ours.  It worked well. We also have a how to video for data collection and if you are talking to teachers, you can add in standards.
Hope that helps!
Liz

Shortly after the New York Botanical Garden shut down in March I held a Zoom training workshop to help our phenology volunteers set up their own sites (in their backyard or even observing street trees on their block) in Nature’s Notebook. Although NYBG has since reopened to the public, our volunteer program is still on pause. We can’t wait to have them back on site but in the meantime a number of volunteers are recording observations “at home” and seem happy to do it.

Hope this helps!

Kristine

Ann,
I've been thinking about this topic quite a bit as well. I may take advantage of the following options to get the word out beyond the 'usual suspects':
- article in weekly newspapers
- posts on Facebook Marketplace
- posts on NextDoor

In my particular case, as my target population is in the Tucson Foothills, I can use outreach to Homeowner Association (HOA) management companies. For instance, I have initial agreement with the management company for my HOA that they would be willing to forward an email to the other HOA Boards for properties that they manage.

Best, Andrea

Thanks for the suggestions.  Because I would like to use my "Master Gardener" status as well as LPL, I'm not certain of the protocols Ohio State University Extension has in place for "advertising".  The garden we have is in front of the Local Board of Education...one would think I could tap the schools but apparently they are very "picky" about outside educational sources.  I'm planning on talking with the 4H "plant lady" to see if her and the kids might be interested.....Only problem about school-aged children is they grow up and leave. There is a local Sun newspaper......hmmmm.
Thanks again!
