* this must have been some other part of "Quebec & Ontario," because we
only recorded one Monarch in all of 2023.

* in our "hotter and wetter" conditions this summer, we've had 5
sightings of Monarchs, and one road-killed in the village here, which is
about usual, though some of the sightings were fly-bys judged by size
and character of flight, rather than actually seeing the lack of the
hind-wing cross veins which would determine that they weren't Viceroys.
We haven't seen any caterpillars on any of the Milkweed stands we've
examined.

What have others seen in eastern Ontario? Adults or caterpillars?

Just so you'll know, they did show up in Nova Scotia this summer -- after being almost totally absent in 2023.  There were lots in 2022.  I have had a few manage to successfully make it from caterpillar to butterfly, but some caterpillars have done very poorly and died.  I've been reading about problems they can have and suspect tachinid flies.  That may be why my moth species counts are down too.

I had one here on July 13th, laying single eggs on several plants in my backyard patch of Milkweed (500 plants in a clearing in the forest).  I don’t think any survived because the plants were being eaten by a Woodchuck by day, Deer at dusk, and a Porcupine at night, as well as lots of Milkweed Tussock moth caterpillars.  It’s a sorry-looking patch now.

Since I've been allowing the milkweeds to spread I have been amazed at
how many critters munch away happily on those "bad-tasting" plants.
Like you say, deer and porcupine seem to love. Vladimir, the invading
groundhog, has ignored them. He preferred to march through my
pumpkins like he was leading Napolean's army. I haven't seen tussock
moth caterpillars yet, even though I had many moths over the summer.

As for the monarch butterflies, I've seen 3 or 4 adults winging
through this past month. Always hopeful to find some caterpillars I
kept checking the milkweeds but have not found a single one.
Disappointing.

Corner of Parslow road and County road  27 ( on the way to Lyn . I let huge patces of milkweed grow in my plantation in hopes that  monarchs would visit. None there,no caterpillars or adults. Did see two elsewhere on the property, one of which was on my butterfly weed ( Asclepiade tuberosa).
