I came across this post yesterday in /r/OttawaFishing, on reddit. It shows a type of gar that was fished out of the Rideau. My assumption is that it's a long nose gar, because of the length of its nose, but it lacks the vibrant spots and colouration I would expect. It's definitely a gar, and its definitely from here. The comments are interesting.

It is interesting. A map from Brian Coad's Fishes of the National Capital Region (the website, not the book) shows lots of observations from the Ottawa and a couple from South Nation tributaries but none from the Rideau: http://www.briancoad.com/NCR/NCRMaps/losseus.htm There's none on iNat for either catchment. The colouration looks obscured by the sand stuck to the fish but otherwise normal.

* it, or an ancestor, would have had to get through locks - it's one of
those unanswerable questions what the fish fauna of the Rideau was
before the Canal allowed them to swim from the Ottawa, and connected the
upper river with Lake Ontario. It was really very sloppy that Colonel By
wasn't required to do an Environmental Assessment before building the
Canal, so we'd know which species had gotten in despite the barrier of
the falls -
https://karstaddailypaintings.blogspot.com/2012/12/rideau-falls-oil-on-canvas-5-x-7-in.html
- It would be interesting, though a huge effort, to DNA the fish &
Mudpuppies in the Canal to see which species had come up from the
Ottawa, and which from Lake Ontario via the Cataraqui.

South Nation Conservation fisheries staff caught Longnose Gar in the South Nation River near Plantagenet in hoop nets. We netted the SNR from 1998 until 2016 (approximately) and we've only caught them twice, always in the Plantagenet reach. The SNR gets much more diverse in fishes closer to the mouth. Freshwater Drum, Brook Silverside, Muskellunge, Sturgeon (the latter two were not netted but were caught by anglers in the bay in Plantagenet, where the depths reach 80-100'). Historically, the waterfalls at Jessup's Conservation Area would have prevented many species of fishes from entering, but the damming at Carillon (near Chute a Blondeau) flooded the falls. Now, the weir at Plantagenet Springs and the water control structures at Crysler, Spencerville, Casselman, Chesterville and Russell each pose as barriers to migration to many fish species.
