Everyone,

This fall we seen hardly any of these -
https://karstaddailypaintings.blogspot.com/2010/10/knothole-triplets-oil-on-canvas-5-x-7.html
- the Oyster Mushroom that we call "Manitoba Maple Knothole Mushroom,"
though the formal name is "Elm Oyster." Each October we're constantly
scanning distant Manitoba Maples for the telltale white spots, often
quite high on trunks and branches, and this fall we've seen only two:
one on one of the Manitoba Maples at the Oxford Mills dam, and some
twisted caps tucked inside a knothole on one of our trees.

These are our primary edible mushroom, so I don't know if others would
notice their absence, but I wonder anyway...

fred.

I noticed an overall lack of mushrooms this fall. We had a wet summer
followed by near drought, the dry conditions not good for growing
fungi. I was hoping to find some puffballs but the only one I saw was
as we drove by a neighbour's property. There were no inky caps in the
usual places, only saw one. Even the turkey tails were in short
supply. Every year while gathering firewood I look for wet rotting
bottoms of the smaller ash trees and set those aside, then go out
after dark to see if there is any foxfire glowing in them.
Disappointedly, there was none at all.
