Everyone,
the arrival verse in the Leopard Frog song is -
Let us live here in Bishops Mills
On the first of every August
When the metamorphs from the South Branch marsh
Come and fill the fields and the gardens.
- and in 2024's sodden summer the arrival was on this traditional &
calculated date.
In this year's drought the first juveniles showed up on 4 August, and
since then there have been a few regularly seen in our little backyard
pool and not-there on the days after the traces we've had of rain. Very
few have been on the streets, and it's nice to recognize individual
frogs in the pool, rather than scraping scraps off the pavement. They
have yet to "fill the fields and the gardens," so we're just waiting for
the drought to break, and perhaps release hordes from the margins of the
creek.
